Chapter 13: Dangerous Games

743 Words
The night air outside the Valerio penthouse was cool, but Bella’s heart burned with anxiety. The gala earlier had ended in whispered gossip, flashing cameras, and Dante’s subtle provocations. Every step she took outside the penthouse felt like walking a tightrope—one misstep and the rumors, the jealousy, the danger could spiral out of control. Ethan had insisted she stay close, his hand never leaving hers, his protective gaze burning into anyone who dared look their way. But despite his presence, Bella could feel the tension—Dante wasn’t done, not by a long shot. Her phone buzzed again. Another message from Dante. “Meet me at the Pier 21 rooftop. I have something you need to see. Alone.” Bella’s chest tightened. She hated that her curiosity battled her fear, but before she could decide, Ethan’s hand gripped hers firmly. “You’re not going alone,” he said, voice low and commanding. “If he’s planning anything, we face it together.” Bella nodded, the reassurance of his presence steadying her nerves. Together, they arrived at the dimly lit rooftop. The city lights stretched below, reflecting on the water, and the wind tugged at her hair. Dante stood at the edge, arms folded, a confident smirk on his face. “Evening, lovebirds,” he said, his tone dripping with amusement. “I see you’re sticking together. How… predictable.” Ethan stepped forward, blocking Bella slightly. “Enough, Dante. What do you want?” Dante’s grin widened. “Entertainment, mostly. But also a little… revelation. Bella, don’t you want to know what everyone’s saying about you two? About your little ‘contract’? About how easily hearts can be twisted when money and status are involved?” Bella’s stomach churned. “Dante… this isn’t fair. You can’t—” “I can and I will,” he interrupted, tossing a small envelope toward her feet. “Read it. See for yourself.” Bella hesitated, then picked it up, hands trembling. Inside were printed social media posts, photos taken during the gala—images twisted to look scandalous, captions written to ignite jealousy, rumors questioning her motives and Ethan’s intentions. Her eyes widened, and heat rose to her cheeks. “He—he’s… he’s making a scene, spreading lies!” Ethan’s gaze hardened, dark and dangerous. “He’s crossing a line,” he said, voice low. “You and I—let’s end this now.” Before Bella could react, Dante’s smirk turned sharper. “Or… you could let me watch. See how easily tension can ruin perfection. Test how strong you really are together.” Ethan moved like a predator, his presence imposing and protective. “Dante, this ends tonight. Leave, or I swear—” Dante laughed softly. “I’ll leave… when the game ends. But the game has just begun.” Bella’s hands shook as Ethan drew her close, his arms enveloping her in a shield of warmth and security. “Ignore him,” he whispered. “He can’t touch us unless we let him. He’s dangerous, but he’s powerless against us if we’re honest and strong together.” Tears threatened to fall as Bella buried her face in his chest. “I’m scared, Ethan… of him, of everything. I don’t want to lose you.” Ethan’s hand stroked her hair, voice soft but resolute. “You won’t. I’ll never let anyone take you from me. Dante, rumors, contracts—they mean nothing. Not when we fight together.” For the first time, Bella felt a surge of courage. She lifted her head, eyes meeting Ethan’s. “Then we fight. Together.” Ethan smiled, a mixture of relief and fierce determination in his dark gaze. “Together,” he echoed. Dante, still standing at the rooftop’s edge, smirked knowingly, sensing that tonight he had tested them—but also realizing that the bond between Bella and Ethan had only grown stronger. His eyes glinted with the promise of more challenges, more chaos. But one thing was clear: the first major battle for Bella’s heart had strengthened, not broken, their love. As the wind whipped around them, Bella rested against Ethan, her fear tempered by trust and desire. For the first time, she understood that love wasn’t just passion—it was resilience, courage, and the willingness to stand together against any storm. And while Dante’s dangerous games were far from over, Bella and Ethan were ready. Together, they could face anything.
