Chapter Twenty Three

ELISE Cold water is splashed onto my face and I wake up with a jerk, choking on it. I wheeze and blink the water out of my eyes to find the man whose house I barged in staring down at me with a stone-hard expression. The woman is gone and so are the two children and it does not look like I am in their living room anymore. This room is tiny and their belongings seem to be heaped upon eachother. There is such a dearth of space available that they have nailed planks of wood high on their wall to pile more of their belongings on. It looks like it could be some type of storage room, as there is no bed in sight. My back is against a solid structure, maybe a huge stool or a sofa and I am securely tied to it.
