Todd watched quietly as Nick took the reins of two of the horses and led them to the small barn. Todd shoved the door open and followed, taking the other horse. They worked for a few minutes in silence, getting the animals unsaddled and bedded down with food and water. Nick kept glancing Todd’s way but refused to let his eyes meet Todd’s. His hands shook, and Todd didn’t have to pay close attention to see how Nick fidgeted and looked around the space, checking out the small windows near the top of the stalls every few minutes. Finally, they were finished.
