Once they hit the main road, the sheriff slapped the reins against the lead two horses, making them go from their steady plodding to a canter. Nick saw bits of concrete through the snow every few yards and realized this was an older road from before the eruption. This road was also obviously more traveled and the snow was packed down with fewer drifts to delay them. Nick had to keep the saddle horses at a steady, fast clip to keep up with the wagon. There was a fence around the doctor’s property and a gate that wasn’t locked, which Nick swung open to let the wagon through. The long drive wound around trees, a small pasture, and a few barns to widen into a parking area on one side of the house. The pasture ran the length of the other side of the drive, and its fencing ran next to the house
