Todd drove the sleigh and kept to the background while Porter attended to his patients, Nick assisting. Every night, dinner was spent listening to Porter reinforcing the day’s events and quizzing Nick repeatedly on medicines and procedures.
As they had every day that week, they settled in Dr. Porter’s sleigh. Todd drove while Porter dictated the way. All the while, Nick sat on the seat beside Todd, hunched over a book, studying. Their first stop was at the home of a young couple with a toddler and an infant of about six weeks.
Todd had become friendly with the couple lately. He made friends easily, especially with those who welcomed Nick along with him. The wife, Margaret, was a partner and chef at the Rambling Moose Café, a place Todd and Nick came to frequent every chance they could. T
