CHAPTER FOUR; The Ultimatum

2022 Words
"Get your hands off her, Dad." The four words slice through the suffocating air of the corridor like a surgical blade. Vicente Tavares doesn't flinch, but his eyes narrow, dark and cold, as he slowly loosens his grip on my elbow. I stumble back a step, my spine slamming into the cold, painted cinderblock of the hallway wall. My pulse is a frantic, hammering bird against my ribs. Enzo steps out from the shadows of the utility stairwell. He isn't wearing his navy blazer anymore; it's tossed carelessly over one broad shoulder, his silk tie loosened, the top two buttons of his crisp white shirt undone. He looks unraveled, dangerous, and completely devoid of the polished, aristocratic charm he usually wears like impenetrable armor at Westbridge Academy. In his right hand, held casually between two long fingers, is a small, matte-black USB drive. My USB drive. "Enzo," Vicente says, his voice a smooth, low baritone that oozes executive corporate authority. "You should be in the auditorium accepting your award. The trustees are waiting." "I said," Enzo repeats, stepping directly between his father and me, his broad shoulders completely blocking Vicente from my line of sight, "get away from her." The tension in the hallway is so thick it feels flammable, heavy with the stench of corporate political power and bitter secrets. I stand frozen against the wall, my eyes locked on the back of Enzo’s neck, watching the hard, rigid line of his jaw flex. He smells like rain, faint tobacco, and cedarwood, a warm contrast to the sterile, bleach-heavy scent of the school basement corridor. Vicente chuckles—a dry, humorless, and menacing sound. "Don't be dramatic, son. I was simply explaining the reality of the situation to Miss Ribeiro. She understands how fragile her position here is." "She doesn't need your explanations," Enzo snaps. He turns his head slightly, his hazel eyes catching mine for a split second. The raw, turbulent emotion in them makes my breath catch in my throat. "Are you okay, Mara?" Mara. Not Ribeiro. "I'm fine," I force out, though my voice is a thin, reedy whisper. I clear my throat, planting my feet firmly on the polished floor, forcing the uncontrollable trembling in my knees to stop. "I'm fine." Enzo turns back to his father, lifting the flash drive between them. "Explain this, Dad." Vicente doesn't even look down at the drive. He calmly adjusts the gold cufflinks at his wrists, unbothered. "I don't have to explain anything to you. I manage this institution's endowment. I protect its reputation—and yours." "By stealing her work?" Enzo’s voice drops an octave, dangerous, thick, and laced with pure disgust. "By hacking her locker database? You used Tavares Security software to override the Westbridge lock system, didn't you?" A cold, terrible realization dawns on me in the dim hallway light. Tavares Security. The elite defense contractor that handles all the digital infrastructure and automated access points for the school's high-tech campus is owned by Enzo’s family. They had the master overrides. They had the encryption keys. Vicente’s calm, aristocratic façade cracks just a fraction, a sharp, ugly sneer breaking through his composure. "She is a charity case, Enzo. A scholarship student from a zip code that doesn't contribute a single dime to this school's legacy. You worked for a year to secure top rank, and you were going to let a girl who thrifted her clothes beat you because of some misguided sense of chivalry?" "She was going to beat me because she was better tonight!" Enzo roars, stepping right into his father's space. The sound echoes violently off the concrete walls, loud enough to shatter glass. I flinch. I’ve seen Enzo arrogant, I’ve seen him smug, and I’ve seen him fiercely competitive—but I have never seen him scream at his father. "She worked harder than anyone in this building," Enzo growls, his chest heaving, his fingers clenching into tight fists at his sides. "She rebuilt four months of research in twenty-three minutes in an empty computer lab because someone played dirty. And that someone was you." "I did it for you!" Vicente hisses back, pointing a sharp finger directly into Enzo’s chest. "You are a Tavares! You do not lose to a girl whose uncle can't even pay his traffic fines! Do you have any idea how it looks to the Board of Trustees if my son—the heir to Tavares Global—comes in second to a scholarship recipient?" "I don't give a damn about the Board!" Enzo steps closer, towering over his father. "And if you drop one more false accusation against her—if you try to plant this drive in my locker, or call the Dean, or touch her scholarship—I walk." Silence falls like an anvil against the concrete floor. Vicente stares at his son, his eyes wide with utter incredulity. "You what?" "I walk," Enzo says, his voice deadly quiet now, carrying an unyielding weight. "I withdraw my application to Columbia. I turn down the trustee nomination. And I go straight to the board and the press with the audit logs from Tavares Security showing that your personal IP address accessed the Westbridge locker servers at 1:15 PM today." My jaw drops. Enzo is committing academic and familial suicide right in front of me. He is threatening to destroy his own father, his own legacy, and his own golden future—all to protect me. Why? Why would he do this? We are enemies. We’ve spent three long years tearing each other down in every debate, every exam, every single hallway interaction. Vicente stares at Enzo, searching his son's face for any sign of a bluff. He finds none. Enzo’s jaw is set like stone, his green-hazel eyes burning with pure, unadulterated defiance. Slowly, deliberately, Vicente steps back. He smoothes the front of his thousand-dollar suit jacket, his expression hardening into a mask of pure ice. "You are making a catastrophic mistake, Enzo," Vicente says softly, though the words drip with poison. "You think you're playing the hero? You're playing with fire. A boy who burned down his own house has nowhere to sleep." "Then I'll sleep in the ashes," Enzo retorts, without a second of hesitation. "Get out of here, Dad. Before I decide to call the Dean right now." Vicente doesn't say another word. He casts one final, murderous glance at me—a look that promises absolute retribution—before turning on his heel and walking away, his leather shoes clicking sharply against the floor until the heavy fire doors slam shut behind him. The silence that replaces him is suffocating. Enzo stays standing with his back to me for a long time, his broad shoulders rising and falling with heavy, ragged breaths. The adrenaline that held him upright seems to drain out of him all at once, leaving him looking exhausted, raw, and vulnerable in a way I’ve never seen before. "Enzo..." I whisper softly. He flinches slightly at the sound of my voice, then turns around slowly. He looks down at the black USB drive in his hand, then steps toward me, holding it out. "Here," he says softly, his voice rough and strained. "It’s yours." I look down at the drive, then up into his dark eyes. "Where did you get it?" "My father's assistant had it," Enzo says, rubbing a hand over his face, pushing his dark hair back from his forehead. "I saw him coming out of the administrative wing right before the showcase started. I... I had a feeling. When you told me your drive was missing, I put the pieces together. I forced him to give it to me while you were on stage." My heart does a terrifying, violent flip in my chest. "You went after your father's team... while I was presenting?" "I told you," Enzo says, taking a step closer, his eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that makes my blood run hot. "I wanted to beat you fair. I wasn't going to let him ruin you." "He was going to frame you," I say, the pieces fitting together in my mind. "He was going to plant it in your locker and blame me for setting you up. He wanted me expelled so I couldn't accept the grant." "I know." Enzo takes another step. He's standing in my personal space now, close enough that I can feel the heat radiating off his body, close enough that I can see the golden flecks in his eyes. "He doesn't understand people like you, Mara. He thinks everyone has a price." "And you?" I ask, my voice barely audible above the quiet hum of the building's ventilation. "Do you have a price, Enzo?" A faint, sad shadow of his usual smirk touches his lips, though it doesn't reach his eyes. "I thought I did. Until tonight." We stand there, inches apart, suspended in the space between hatred and something terrifyingly new. The bitter rivalry that defined every single day of my high school life feels distant, trivial compared to the storm we just stepped into. "Why did you do it?" I demand, my defensive walls snapping back into place as the shock begins to wear off. I poke a finger into his chest, hard, feeling the solid muscle beneath his shirt. "Why throw away your reputation? Why threaten your father? We aren't friends, Tavares! You spent three years trying to outrank me!" Enzo doesn't back away from my finger. He catches my hand, his long, warm fingers wrapping around my wrist. He doesn't squeeze, but he doesn't let go either. The heat of his skin against my pulse point sends a sharp shock straight up my arm. "Because you drive me insane, Ribeiro," he murmurs, his voice dropping low, buzzing against my nerves. "Because I spend half my life watching you, waiting for you to fail, and when you almost did tonight... it felt like the floor falling out from under me." My breath hitches. "Enzo—" "Meet me tonight," he cuts me off, his thumb brushing gently over the sensitive skin of my inner wrist before he lets my hand drop. I blink, thrown completely off balance. "What?" "After hours. 11:00 PM. The main library, third-floor stacks." "Are you crazy?" I stare at him. "The campus closes at nine. The security guards sweep the building—" "Tavares Security handles the building access, remember?" He pulls a silver keycard from his pocket, flashing it between his fingers. "I have the master bypass code. Meet me there." "Give me one good reason why I would break school rules to meet you in an empty library in the middle of the night," I snap, crossing my arms over my chest to hide the fact that my hands are shaking again. Enzo steps closer, leaning down until his lips are just inches from my ear. The scent of him wraps around me like a trap. "Because my father isn't done, Mara," he whispers, his breath warm against my skin, making tiny goosebumps break out across my neck. "And if we don't figure out our next move together... you won't have a scholarship by Monday morning." He pulls back, his hazel eyes searching my face for an answer. I stare at him, my heart pounding a frantic rhythm against my ribs. He's dangerous. He’s a Tavares. He’s everything I should run away from if I want to survive Westbridge Academy with my future intact. But as I look at the boy who just burned his entire life down to hand me my USB drive, I know I'm already in too deep. "11:00 PM," I say, my voice steady despite the chaos inside me. "Don't be late, Tavares." Enzo smiles—a real, genuine smile that warms his entire face and makes my stomach perform a somersault. "I'm never late, Ribeiro." He turns and walks down the corridor, disappearing into the shadows of the stairwell, leaving me alone in the dim light of the hallway with my presentation in my hand and my world completely turned upside down.
