"We are the incarnations of gods who are still left in the world. We can live until now because we can mingle and live like ordinary humans."
That's roughly what Lynx answered when I asked where he had that power from. And I just responded with a short "Oh" but with a questioning face. I was too confused about where to start with my questions.
"Your things are downstairs. I also took your cell phone from class. Pretty good way to freak me out and track you down," said Lynx about my real cell phone that was taped under his desk, not the other phone that Gilbert had taken.
As I was mentioned about cellphone, I just realized something that "I need to call my mother..."
"I called her while you were asleep. I said there was a sudden group assignment so you'd be home late," said Lynx, cutting me off, then continued, "You can bring your things later. We have to go to my parents now."
Now Lynx was at the door. Pointing to the part of the door where there should be a handle to open it. But there was just a hand-sized square frame on the edge of the door.
"Put your five fingers down like this."
Lynx was stretching out the five fingers of his right hand and placing them on the frame. A green light emanated from where Lynx had placed his finger.
"Once your fingerprints are identified, all you have to do is use one of your fingers to open this door and the door to my room below."
"This advanced technology..." There was a second silence before I realized something. "Wow...don't tell me you designed it too?"
I already knew the answer just by looking at Lynx's expression. That annoyed face. Maybe I've never seen a species like the Lynx, which doesn't seem to like it when someone praises it.
I did what Lynx said before registering my hands to the system. After the green turned white, I tried to touch the same part of the door with my index finger. And the door opened automatically.
"Anyway, Lynx... you really don't need a door..."
Lynx looked at me for a moment. Then he disappeared. I regret what I said just now.
Annoyed, I sighed, then walked down the stairs alone. When I looked down, Lynx was standing on the edge of the pantry table, below the stairs I was climbing now. He looked at me while opening a can of drink that was suddenly in his hand.
"This practicality made me hard to wait. I just want you to understand a little from my point of view," said Lynx, who appeared suddenly and walked beside me. Accompanied me down the stairs.
Compared to Lynx's excuse for his impatience, I see it from the other side. How amazing Lynx was to be able to dampen all his strength to become a normal person. Walking. Picking up stuff. And sitting for hours in the car when he could easily change places and move everything.
"And all this security is, of course, still useful for people trying to break into our house," Lynx said and took a final sip of his drink.
"How did you design it? Just imagine it and then everything just changes?"
"Hmm... by way of imagining, yes that's right. But it's not just imagining. I have to know what design, structure and type of material I want."
If Lynx designed this house and everything in it, I couldn't imagine the brain of this eighteen year old man beside me. Maybe equivalent to the thoughts of five heads who are professionals in their respective fields. However, I guess I'm at the point where I can't be surprised anymore by his words. I'm sure my mouth was as level as the door that just opened and closed automatically.
I was still trying to digest my situation and Lynx's words slowly. Although hearing Lynx was an incarnation of God was not as scary as hearing Lynx really liked me, there were still many questions stuck in my brain. My thoughts were now like pebbles that spill and fill the entire bath tub. It feels full of little things that would be heavy if moved all at once.
"Save your questions after we meet my father."
Lynx's words suddenly made me want to pull out one big pebble. Crucial question.
"You can't read my mind, can you?" I asked, imagining the sequel to the vampire film that had gone viral.
"No. And don't worry, we can't change your perception."
I breathed a sigh of relief at the information that kept me from needing to be on guard all the time. At that moment, I felt a gentle touch on the head. The very thing Lynx used to do to me before. But the strange sting in my body reappeared with a scene I wanted to forget. So I just dodged it.
"Sorry.. I am still not getting used to the sudden touch."
I said while making a defensive move. My back was against the wall and my right hand brushed off Lynx's. Lynx still flinched in front of me. Holding a can of drink in his left hand and with his right fist clenched into a fist. It was as if Lynx's right hand was trying to endure the pain of my opposing stance.
Was my defensive attitude the result of the horrific incident this afternoon? Or because of the words from Lynx?
Even though I'm sure there won't be anything as terrible as this afternoon, I felt like my body would still avoid it if Lynx had thoughts that were beyond my limits. In any case, Lynx had thought of doing the same thing with a strange man in the afternoon. Since I knew, it has been really hard to neutralize everything that Lynx did to me.
"Ouch!"
A flick landed on my forehead, causing me to snap out of my thoughts and let out a sound that broke the silence.
"Don't think too much," Lynx said with a straight face, but I could tell he was holding back his disappointment.
How can I stop thinking?
After all night thinking about what I would say if Lynx confessed his feelings for me, I was always terrified. Afraid of losing my best friend. But I would be more afraid of losing the Lynx figure completely. That fear was evident when Lynx told me to leave him. If I hadn't acted at that time, I would have been in my room by now. Feeling regretful
After finding out Lynx likes me, what do I do? Just accept and then try to avoid it like before?
I'm currently one rung higher than the Lynx, who was already going down. I could see his broad shoulders and straight back from behind. The fear reappeared. I was just afraid that the distance between me and Lynx would be widened than before.
Without thinking, I chose to do something at that time. I reached Lynx's shoulder with my left hand, before Lynx continued on his way down the stairs. Lynx turned. While my right hand was trying to grab his neck, I made my face close to his face. Until finally, I believed my goal was almost reached. I just closed my eyes.
I just kissed Lynx. Even though it only lasted a fraction of a second, it felt like my heart was about to burst.
"What are you doing?" asked Lynx, sounding panicked.
"I... overcame my... fear?" My voice sounded much more frantic than Lynx.
My body suddenly became so weak. Instead of leaning against the wall, my legs couldn't even support myself, fell slowly and sat on the stairs.
"Seems like trying to kiss you right now is... a lot better than being always terrified of being touched by you," I said a few moments later.
Lynx was currently sitting beside me. Looking at me with a worried look.
"Yeah, I should have realized it because I've known you for a long time. You can't stand being told to hold your thoughts like that."
Lynx said while trying to touch my cheek. He had time to stop his hand when there was only one inch left of my face, but he continued. Lynx just tried to overcome his worriness about me also.
The touch of Lynx's hand felt more normal than before. Even though the sting that made me shudder hasn't gone away. Then suddenly I realized. Scene after scene was playing on my mind at high speed. All the scene when Lynx tried to approach me. All the scenes where he tried to touch me. Very smooth. I was even getting used to his touch without feeling terrified.
When he puts candy in my mouth every morning, there was a pause of a few seconds before Lynx retracted his hand. Now I could remember with certainty that Lynx's index finger was between my lips at that moment and he shifted his finger little by little.
When we eat snacks in my room, Lynx often feeds me with his hands. In fact, I often lick Lynx's finger because of the spice from the snack that I can still feel on his finger. Sometimes I feel his finger in my mouth too long. But I ignored that thought because we were usually playing games or watching movies.
And I couldn't count how many times Lynx laid his hand on my head, cheeks, neck and even my waist. I just realized that I was so stupid to not be aware of Lynx's unusual gesture. All this time, I thought the things Lynx did were normal. It turned out that Lynx was doing all these moves on purpose. And I could imagine how he was staring at me from the side while doing that.
And also, that means... Lynx was also holding himself back from further action. Like refraining from kissing me.
"I'm... really insensitive, huh?" I asked, trying to hold back the awkwardness of Lynx's intense touch and gaze.
"About what?"
"About your body language all this time."
Lynx smiled with one side of his lips. That smile was new to me. Somehow, I didn't know what it meant.
"Now I want to help you overcome your fears again. What do you think?" Lynx asked, bringing his face closer to mine.
"Why does it seem like you're the one giving me more advantage? More precisely, I'm the one who willingly helped your desires."
"Should we argue before kissing?"
I was at a loss for words seeing Lynx's face, which was only an inch from mine. The more I saw Lynx's approaching face, the more I couldn't concentrate. I could only close my eyes to answer Lynx's question.
How does it feel to kiss your best friend?
Ridiculous? Yes. Afraid? Yes.
And... Flavor... strawberry?
I didn't expect Lynx to kiss me until he stuck his tongue in my mouth. The flavored drink he was drinking was now mixed with both of our saliva. Lynx held my head with his left hand so it wouldn't hit the wall. While his right hand touched my left cheek to adjust the position of my face while doing this kiss.
Wait.... Lynx...
I opened my eyes and saw Lynx was still closing his eyes. Enjoy the second by second kiss that was so aggressive. Again. Lynx's aggressive face was new to me.
I tried to stop this kiss but couldn't. My head couldn't be pushed back anymore because it'd already hit the wall. I tried to turn left or right, but Lynx's mouth and right hand tried to follow my movement and return it to its starting position.
So I had to push Lynx's body. Even though what happened at that time was like I was banging on a bag that didn't budge. I felt time go by so slowly that Lynx finally opened his eyes and ended the kiss in surprise.
".... ah... sorry..."
I couldn't hear any other words from Lynx other than sorry. I was too busy to control my cough and catch my breath. Running out of breath and choking on your own spit while kissing must not be fun.
Lynx stretched out his right hand to me, which was now holding a glass filled with mineral water. Then I drank it slowly, afraid of choking again.
"Can kissing really be this tiring?" I asked without feeling my question sounded stupid.
"Thank you for everything you did today, Rui. But we don't have much time," said Lynx while holding the glass in my hand and it disappeared.
"You kissed me for more than two minutes. Yes, you seem like you don't have much time and are in a hurry."
"I don't regret my time on it. So I'll save another time."
In an instant, Lynx and I were in a long, dimly lit corridor. In front of us there was a large door which, again, did not have a handle like a normal door.
"I really need to get used to this speed of yours, Lynx."
I said while falling after teleporting for the second time. Lynx reached out my hand and I pulled myself towards him to stand. Regarding the "didn't have time" sentence, Lynx's face was in serious mode.
This time it was Lynx who touched the door with his index finger. A moment later, the door opened into the room. As soon as I entered the room, the thing that immediately caught my attention was the three people who were there. Reinhard Olivine, Charlotte Olivine and Vanilla Irish Paella. The three of them were sitting on the sofa at the far end of the room and seemed to be having a serious conversation. As soon as I saw them, all eyes were on me.
Reinhard looked displeased that someone was interrupting his conversation. He just looked at me intently without changing his expression. Charlotte looked at me with furrowed brow, then looked at Lynx who was walking towards her. While Vanilla immediately got up from the seat, ran over to me and hugged me.
"Rui, I'm sorry we didn't realize you were in danger."
Vanilla said in a very worried voice. Vanilla's concern is more evident when she looks at me like a mother to her own child.
"It's okay, Vi. By the way, what's really going on here? Lynx didn't tell me much," I said before following Lynx, who was staring intently at his father when he reached his father's position.
"One of the employees of the Olivine residence was killed. All the employees felt threatened so they rioted this afternoon. Most have been sent to the villa for safekeeping."
Hearing Vanilla's answer, I also understood what Lynx had said earlier about "I didn't understand what I was getting into". Maybe today could be the last day I breathe like one of those employees. Lynx turned to me. Asked me to come over to him. Meanwhile, Charlotte was saying something I couldn't hear clearly. I could only hear my name being called, Olivine, and the word "danger".
I was already beside Lynx and Reinhard was looking at me from head to toe. After meeting him face-to-face two days ago, I became quite used to his intimidation.
"Rui better know what's going on too," Charlotte said, looking at me with a frown. "All the perpetrators involved in the incident this afternoon have been killed."
"H...how? And...why?" The sentence I said couldn't come out smoothly because I was still digesting the information given by Charlotte.
I still have mixed feelings. Whether I was quite happy that someone was retaliating for the arbitrary behavior of Gilbert and his gang. And also angry at being able to take other people's lives so easily just because of what happened this afternoon.
"My bodyguard and I were searching for the residence of one of the people we arrested. Suddenly, someone stabbed the suspect even though he was specially guarded by my guard. But we couldn't trace him at all. Others also said the same thing.
Vanilla said as she walked over to one of the sofas and sat down next to Charlotte. Then her head suggested me to sit beside her. Meanwhile, Lynx remained motionless while giving an intense look at his father. So I just stood up to accompany Lynx.
"The remaining three people who managed to escape were found dead after the car they were traveling in was hit and pinned by a truck," Vanilla continued.
"So the accident was also a homicide?" I asked spontaneously as I linked it to Charlotte's words at the beginning of the conversation.
"Yes. Because the truck was deliberately rammed into the car at high speed. We checked that there were no damaged components of the truck or traffic conditions that required it to hit the car. Strangely enough... the truck driver repeatedly said that something was wrong, controlling his truck and the brakes didn't work when used. Yes... although no one would believe him when making such an excuse..."
Vanilla's words lead to a conclusion that suddenly occurred to me. Before I asked further, Reinhard had already taken over the conversation.
“With all the information obtained, the conclusion is that the murder that took place in this house and the five people involved in the incident at your school are the same perpetrator and are one of the incarnations of a god,” said Reinhard while looking at me coldly.
My eyeballs shifted from Reinhard to Charlotte, then to Lynx. There were differences in the expressions of the three family members. And Lynx looks really pissed off right now.
Lynx threw three things on the table that was located between the sofas arranged in a U-shape. The three things that came from me for research assistance: my disguised cell phone, a recording device that was inserted into the buttons of my uniform and a box lens that I had removed.
"Aren't there any tools you gave him to defend him?" Lynx asked, looking at his father with wide eyes.
“I didn't prepare anything when I met him. So I just took my men's equipment for him,” Reinhard replied casually.
"You told me from the start that there was a possibility that the terrorists had the same power as us. So it was your fault that you didn't anticipate Rui's safety when giving out the investigation equipment!" said Lynx, starting to raise the volume.
"At that time he was still one of the people under my supervision," Reinhard replied, still not agreeing with his son's words. Before Lynx spit out his father's irritation again, Reinhard continued his sentence. "Now I believe. Because you brought him here."
"I had my own reasons for not bringing Rui here before."
"Then you didn't manage to anticipate his safety either."
Reinhard's last words left Lynx speechless. I already knew how much Lynx blamed himself for what had happened to me, so it wouldn't be strange if Reinhard's words kept Lynx from moving.
I can't do anything right now. In this Olivine residence I was just a stranger who was accidentally bound because of what happened to me. Let alone defending one of his family members, I still didn't feel I was worthy enough to give an opinion considering how complex the matter was.
I saw Vanilla and Charlotte look at each other and communicate in sign language using their faces. The two women looked worried when they saw the two men in this room continuing the conversation only to lash out at each other.
"Isn't it time for dinner now?" said Charlotte, trying to break the silence and change the subject.
The sharp gaze between a father and his son still looked intense. However, finally, the son turned his face because he could not continue the attack of words on his father again. Lynx sighed loudly while looking at Charlotte.
"I'm going to Rui's house."
Lynx's words were the last words I heard in Reinhard's study room. By the time Lynx's hand nearly touched mine, I had already prepared myself that I would be in another room in the next few seconds.
