Chapter 17 A SCENT THAT SHOULDN'T EXIST

938 Words
The room felt too still. Then the door opened. The air changed instantly. It wasn’t something I could see—it was something I felt. Heavy and powerful. Like the room itself had bowed to whoever had just entered. The maid lowered her head immediately as she stepped in. I looked up slowly The woman was… different. She was beautiful— with long redish hair, dark eyes, and fair skin. There was something about her that made my chest tighten. Something commanding. Something that made it hard to look away. Her eyes found mine. And held them. “Leave us,” she said softly. The maid bowed and quickly exited, closing the door behind her. Now, it was just the two of us. She walked toward me slowly, each step calm and deliberate. I felt my heart begin to race again, my body tensing without my permission. She stopped beside the bed. For a moment, she simply looked at me. Then she spoke. “What is your name?” Her voice was smooth—but there was something sharp beneath it. “Silver,” I answered quietly. She repeated it under her breath as if testing how it felt. “Silver…” Then, without warning, she leaned closer. I froze. Her face came near mine, too close, her presence overwhelming. She inhaled slowly—as if she were… smelling me. My breath caught in my throat. She moved slightly, her gaze narrowing as she leaned closer again, this time near my neck, then my hair. Searching for something. Confusion flooded me, followed quickly by unease. She pulled back slightly, her brows drawing together. Something wasn’t right. I could see it in her face. “What…” I whispered, my voice shaking. “What are you doing?” She didn’t answer immediately. Instead, she studied me again, more intensely this time—like I was a puzzle that refused to fit together. “That scent,” she said slowly. “It’s unfamiliar,” she said. “It is… unclear.” Her eyes darkened. 00“It is there,” she continued, her voice quieter now. “And yet… it is not.” A chill ran down my spine. “I don’t understand,” I said. Her gaze snapped back to mine. “What are you?” she asked. The question hit me harder than anything else. “What do you mean?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. Her tone sharpened. “Answer me.” My chest tightened. “I’m… human.” The moment I said it, something in her expression changed. She straightened slowly, her eyes still locked on mine. “No,” she said. My breath caught. “You do not smell like a human.” Silence filled the room. I felt my heart begin to race again, faster this time, panic creeping in. “That’s not possible,” I said quickly. “I am human. I’ve always been. My father is a human, and my mother was one too” She watched me carefully. Then she spoke again—calm, but firm. “I definitely know how a human smells like, and that's not the scent you are giving. Whatever you are, you were able to pass through the gates, which definitely proves you are not human." "You are in the palace of the Red Pack. The Alpha King himself saved you from getting eaten by noctyras ” She said The words settled heavily in the air. I swallowed. “The maid said that… but I don’t know what that means.” “It means,” she said, “that you are no longer in the human world.” My chest tightened. “You were found in our forest,” she continued. “Unconscious. Injured. Alone.” “I remember falling,” I whispered. “But… I didn’t know where I was.” Her eyes narrowed slightly. “That forest does not belong to humans.” A chill ran through me. “If you were truly human,” she said slowly, “you would have never made it into this world.” My fingers curled tightly into the sheets. “So what am l?” I asked. She didn’t answer. Instead, she looked at me again—this time with suspicion. “I don’t know. You are something else,” she said quietly. “Totally different. But l am going to find out what you are.” Fear gripped my chest. “I don’t know what you are saying,,” I said, shaking my head. “The more you speak, the more you are confusing me” She held my gaze for a long moment. Then she stepped back. "For now,” she said, “you will rest.” “That’s it?” I asked, my voice trembling. “You’re just going to leave me like this? Without answers?” “When l have them, I am going to tell you,” she replied. Frustration and fear twisted inside me. “Ok when am l allowec to leave?” She turned toward the door. “Soon,” she said. She paused, her hand resting lightly on the handle. "Take care, Silver," The door opened. Then closed. And just like that—I was alone. Silence filled the room, but it didn’t feel peaceful anymore. It felt heavy. Pressing. Like the walls themselves were watching me. I stared down at my hands. “They said I’m not human…” I whispered. My heart pounded. My mind raced back to that night. The strength. The rage. My breathing grew uneven. “…Then what am I?”
