Karma's pov
I stood frozen in fear, staring back at the officer. "She isn't here.." I lied through my teeth. I had no other choice, seeing as we had no idea where Jade had gone on the property or somewhere else, I just prayed she stayed out of sight as much as my worrying heart wanted to find her. I knew she had to be on the property somewhere I wasn't gone for that long, it felt as though I had turned my back on a toddler for two seconds and somebody came and snatched them up. My eyes fled from sheriff Mark's to Jason's. I could tell his mind was working I could feel the gears in his head shifting, steaming, the smug look on his face as he stared me down like a wolf stalking its prey gave it away.
"Where would we find her?" Mark asked me. I have known Mark ever since I was a little girl. He and my father were partners before the world turned upside down on us. I loved my father but, hated hearing mark say he was a great officer he was idiotic in my eyes after he raged out killing our mother. Mark's face had a smug look too, not as intense as Jason's, but rather in the way that he thought he was smart, above me, above everyone, just because of his badge.
"I couldn't tell you." I said almost smart mouth like, he thought that he was smarter and that pissed me off he thought he could come here and dis my family acting like he knew something about our tragedy, well he didn't and I wasn't about to let my baby sister fall into the hands of someone who thought they were doing the right thing. "I took her away from here, after all I have everyone around me threatening to take her away." I spat, staring them both in the eyes "She has two siblings old enough to care for her am I not fit to that role?"
They both stared back at me silently. Jody hadn't bothered to say a word, but why would he? None of what he could say was his place and he knew that, none of this was even his fight, but he decided to side with her, knowing right from wrong, and I was sure as hell glad he was on my side now because he could have been standing over there with the f*****g feds Jason decided to bring onto my property, one of which who thought he had a right to be there, place in the picture. I looked at Mark's face, his dirty blonde hair and gross-looking goatee that cut off just at the end. He disgusted me.
"No? I guess you'd rather her be in the hands of someone who'd make her suffer."
Jason's brow furrowed into an angry position and he curled his lip. Oh, had I just made him angry, he grunted, making mark look from Jason back at myself his expression a worried one as if he was scared of Jason's reaction, "Now that's enough. Jason has paper's and he's the signed guardian to that little girl. If you don't like it you should take it up to the court." He strongly stated. "If Jaden isn't here, you wouldn't mind us searching the house, would you?" he c****d an eyebrow,, brought his arm down almost in a curtsey position across his chest, I hope that he was asking me to dance because I wasn't f*****g cinderella and I wouldn't just step on his toes, I'd stick my high heel up his ass.
"Go search as you please," I calmly retorted, throwing my hand down and bowing a bit, copying his motion and exemplifying it. He scoffed and pushed passed me by brushing against my arm. I got up from my lowered position and crossed my arms across my chest, returning my stern gaze towards Jason and the rest of the pigs that stood outside my home.
After a few minutes, Mark exited the door and shook his head at Jason, telling him she wasn't there. Jason took his eyes off me then stared at Jody coldly, suspiciously. "Just as I told you, I have no reason to lie."
Mark turned around with his back towards me and stood closely at Jason's shoulder, reeling his head over his own to look at me. "Right, so where'd you take her?" he asked slyly.
"Now why would I tell you that?" I almost laughed. He turned and Jason followed behind him. Never did he utter a single word.
"You couldn't have taken her far..." his voice was turning to a mumble as they walked away, along with the rest of the officers. "We'll find her, and we'll let ya know when we do" Mark evilly smirked, slamming his car door as Jason slammed his trucks. I watched them clear out as I felt Jody move closer towards me, my back was to him.
"Well that was f*****g fun.." I looked at him, rolling my eyes.
"We should probably go find her.. " he uttered. I nodded in agreement. I ushered my hands at him in a shooing motion.
"Yep, go on, go on" I said as we scurried behind the house like rats.
Jason's pov
I started down the road following the long line of police cars, not believing that Jade wasn't back on the farm. I didn't think that she would just leave Jody behind like that. He doesn't even know Karma all that well. Why would he be comfortable staying there alone with her? I felt frustrated at the fact that he still had betrayed me in so many ways, after all that I'd done for him.
Helping her leave, taking her to a bus station and even running away with her when we tracked her down, I don't believe for a second that he would have let her take off on her own, he wouldn't leave her without that extra protection. I gritted my teeth in annoyance. I knew that they were trying to throw me off, but I still couldn't be sure of what the truth was. All the cops searched was the house they didn't even bother to look around the farm.
I firmly grabbed the steering wheel and couldn't help but think that maybe Mark didn't want me to find the little brat either. Maybe he knew we were being led on a wild goose chase but still led us on to find nothing, everyone is deceiving and lying to my face. I looked out my driver's side window as we drove slowly past the remainder of the farm. That's when I saw the pathway leading into the back of the farm which was used for transporting the horses in their trailers come racing season. I looked at the line of cars in front of me, then back to the route. If there was nothing found in the few towns in front of us, then Mark and his lazy team could figure that out for themselves. I was checking the back of the goddamn farm.
I roughly turned the wheel, creating a skid mark as I did as a bit of smoke blew past the windows. I was the last car in the line, so nobody would see me missing until they got to the next town or two. I started heading down the path which was covered on both sides by trees so it could cover my truck, but not enough because of the vibrant red that it was, so I parked it just a little way away from the road, but not enough to be seen by anyone roaming around. Dust picked up as I stopped the vehicle. I exited by slamming the door behind me. I strutted down the path looking both ways as I did, as if I was looking both ways before crossing a street, left to right, scanning the area. That's when I heard two voices and I stopped. Looking out towards the fields at the back of the house were Karma and Jody. Although I couldn't make out what they were saying, it was obvious that they were looking for something or someone.
I continued a little faster pace down the path, unsure why, but it was as if I could sense something at the end of it, it felt as if I was about to win an unknown competition that only I was competing in. Soon I ended up at the end of the pathway and directly where I stood an old barn was in front of me, the old barn where it happened. I scoffed, of course. I would end up here of all places. I closed my eyes and covered them with my hand. I wanted to scream, but I also wanted to keep my stealthiness in check, so I took a breath before I started walking, only to stop in my tracks once upon entering the structure.
Scorch burns entailed the walls or what was left of them. I could only see three while the other one was gone completely, weeds and undergrowth took over what was left of the floor and most of the roof as my eyes left the floor and continued up towards the ceiling, but most importantly she was in the middle of it. Jade. Her back was towards me, studying something that was in her hands, such an easy grab. Why does she always make it so easy for me?
Quietly, I took a step forwards, but she didn't turn around, so I took another one and, still she was so enticed by whatever she had been looking at that she hadn't noticed me until I put my arms around her mouth and waist, then pulled her back onto my body, holding her tight as she tried to scream which only made me grasp my hands around her mouth tighter.
"Keep your f*****g mouth shut" I hissed, feeling my authority come tumbling back into place in my head. I looked out towards the farm as I heard Karma and Jody once again shouting for Jade, who was struggling against my grip. I grabbed her hair and ripped her head back two or three times to make her dizzy. She cried out in pain and I took her head back once again to look at me, tears were running down her cheeks, she stopped struggling and I couldn't care less how she felt. I looked back towards the yelling voices and snapped her head in their direction. I chuckled to myself.
"Time to show who won the game, and who gets the prize.." I whispered in her ear, earning a shudder in return, I started hauling her off towards my truck, not letting go of her hair but pulling most of her weight by her body. I dragged her back down the path and threw her into the passenger side of the truck, placing the childlock on as I did. She wasn't getting away again. I ignored my phone as I saw mark calling. I guess they must have made it to the next town by now and noticed that I was gone. Turning the vehicle on, I revved loudly, locking my eyes on the two wandering figures in the fields. They both turned in my direction, I revved a second time, seeing them freeze, and that's when I decided to crash through the trees, driving fast, making sure to tear up the dirt in the field under my wheels as I did.
I came really close to the pair of them and as I did, Jade started pounding on the windows to let them know she was there. Perfect. Now they were the ones who got to go on a wild goose chase. I looked towards their shocked faces, both running and reaching out towards Jades' door yelling things to her that neither of us could hear. I waved them the middle finger as I revved out of the property and back onto the road, taking off in the direction of the next town, laughing to myself once again.
I told them that I'd be taking what was mine.
