Chapter 3: The Echoes of a Ghost

1797 Words
Hannah’s POV The library was always my sanctuary. It was the one place in Manila where the weight of my dual existence couldn't crush me. Surrounded by the comforting, musty scent of old paper and the rhythmic clicking of keyboards, I could completely submerge myself in the clean, predictable world of academics. Here, I wasn't the alluring, high-end nightlife beauty who smiled for survival. I was just Hannah—a dedicated political science major with a frayed backpack, heavy glasses, and a desperate dream of a quiet future. For months following that fateful Friday night with Leo, my life became a frantic sprint toward absolute normalcy. The memory of his intense, dark eyes and the intoxicating heat of his touch still haunted my quietest moments, but I forced those thoughts into the deepest recesses of my mind. It was a beautiful mistake. A dangerous anomaly. I had to convince myself that to a man of his staggering, billionaire stature, I was nothing more than a fleeting physical attraction. A temporary escape. I was just a girl captivated by **his body**, his power, and nothing more. He would wake up, find the bed empty, curse my absence for an hour, and return to ruling his corporate empire. That was the script I wrote for myself to keep from losing my mind. So, I threw myself entirely into my studies. My daily routine became an unyielding loop: wake up at dawn, attend lectures, bury my face in constitutional law textbooks, and study until my vision blurred. I severed every single tie to the nightlife. I blocked numbers, changed my phone SIM card, threw away my glamorous dresses, and swore I would never step foot near the VIP clubs again. I was building a fortress out of my education, a wall so thick that the ghosts of my past could never climb over it. "Hannah, if you stare at that page any harder, you're going to burn a hole through it," Betty whispered, sliding into the wooden chair across from me. She pushed a half-eaten bag of chips toward me, her face pinched with a familiar, maternal worry. "You haven't looked up in three hours. Seriously, Han, the midterms aren't going to run away." I offered her a weak smile, adjusting my glasses. "I just need to finish this chapter, Betts. If I lose my focus now, I’ll never get it back." Gerick dropped into the seat next to Betty, his large frame making the old wooden table groan. He didn't have a textbook with him; instead, his phone was clutched tightly in his hand, his expression uncharacteristically tense. He leaned across the table, his voice dropping to a low, hurried murmur that instantly shattered the library’s peaceful quiet. "Han, look at me," Gerick commanded softly. "Are you sure everything is okay at that 24-hour convenience store you work at?" My heart stuttered, a cold drop of dread hitting my stomach. *The lie.* I had told them I worked the graveyard shift at a convenience store to explain my exhaustion and sudden influx of cash. "Yeah, of course. Why do you ask?" Gerick rubbed the back of his neck, glancing around to ensure the librarian wasn't listening. "Because my cousin works security for a high-end logistics firm downtown, and he told me something crazy this morning. He said there’s a quiet, massive storm tearing through the city's private intelligence channels. Someone incredibly powerful—someone with unlimited money—is hunting for a girl who vanished from the high-end club district a few months ago." The blood instantly drained from my face. My fingers locked onto the edge of my textbook so hard the cardboard bent. "What... what do you mean?" "They're calling her a ghost," Gerick whispered, his eyes wide with a mix of awe and concern. "This tycoon is spending millions, putting pressure on every bar owner, pulling illegal street surveillance, and paying off private investigators just to find one woman who disappeared into thin air. The underground whispers are saying he’s acting like a mafia boss obsessed with a debt. People are terrified, Han. Whoever this guy is, he’s tearing Manila apart piece by piece just to find her." Betty gasped, covering her mouth. "Oh my god... that's terrifying. Why would someone that powerful be hunting a girl? Do they think she stole something? Is he going to kill her?" "That's what everyone thinks," Gerick nodded grimly. "They think she crossed a dangerous man, and he’s coming to exact a fatal revenge. To erase a mistake permanently." I couldn't breathe. The air in the library suddenly felt thick, hot, and suffocating. The words on the page in front of me dissolved into a terrifying blur. *A nationwide manhunt. Spending millions. Threatening anyone in his way.* They didn't know the girl was me. They didn't know that the powerful, formidable hunter was the very man whose touch I had craved in the dark. In my panic, my mind twisted the truth into a lethal nightmare. I didn't realize Leo’s search was born out of a desperate, unhinged love. To a girl like me, a billionaire pulling strings to track down a GRO meant only one thing: danger. I assumed I had offended him by running away, that I had wounded his massive pride, and now he was deploying his infinite power to destroy me. "Hannah? Hey, you're completely white," Betty's voice sounded like it was underwater. She reached across the table, grabbing my trembling hand. "Don't worry, okay? You're safe. You work in a brightly lit grocery store, far away from whatever dark mafia stuff is happening in the clubs. It has nothing to do with us." "Yeah..." I choked out, a cold sweat breaking out across my spine as I forced a robotic nod. "Nothing to do with us." I pulled my hand away, packing my books with frantic, uncoordinated movements. I needed to leave. I needed to hide. The illusion of my peaceful student life shattered into a thousand jagged pieces. For two long years after that day, I lived in absolute terror, looking over my shoulder at every shadow, convinced that the formidable titan would find me and exact his revenge. I buried myself so deeply in my university studies that I became invisible, praying every single night that the bubbles of my existence would never pop. --- Leo’s POV "Give me something I can use, or I will find an intelligence agency that can." My voice was a low, dangerous rumble that cut through the absolute silence of my executive boardroom. I stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, looking out over the sprawling, hazy skyline of Manila. The city was a massive labyrinth of concrete and steel, a labyrinth that was currently keeping my greatest treasure hidden from me. Behind me, the head of my private security detail and three of the highest-paid private investigators in the country bowed their heads, sweating profusely despite the freezing air conditioning. "Mr. Lead," the lead investigator stammered, his hands trembling as he adjusted a folder. "We have turned the entire nightlife district upside down. We have cross-referenced employment records, paid off every club manager from Makati to Quezon City, and scanned hours of low-resolution street surveillance from that Friday night. But whoever she is... she didn't use a real name. She left no digital footprint. It’s like she vanished like bubbles into the wind." I turned slowly, my massive, muscular frame casting a long, intimidating shadow over the mahogany table. I didn't yell. I never needed to yell to command terror. I simply adjusted the cuffs of my tailored navy suit, my dark, piercing eyes pinning the investigator to his seat. "A human being cannot simply cease to exist," I said, my baritone dropping to an icy whisper. "She is in this city. She is breathing my air. And you are telling me that with a multi-billion-dollar empire at my disposal, I cannot find a single girl?" "Sir, the underworld is whispering," my head of security stepped forward, his voice tight. "Because of the sheer scale of our search, the streets think you are hunting a traitor. They think a dangerous client or an enemy has crossed you, and you are looking for fatal revenge. The club owners are terrified; they are covering up information because they fear a mafia war." I let out a sharp, dark laugh that held absolutely no humor. A mafia war? A fatal revenge? They understood nothing. They couldn't possibly comprehend the dangerous, burning obsession that had been born in the silence of that empty luxury hotel room two years ago. Waking up to a cold, empty bed hadn't just angered my pride—it had fractured my soul. That girl, with her quiet, guarded fire and breathtaking sensuality, had reawakened a dormant passion inside my chest. For one unforgettable night, I wasn't a corporate dictator or an untouchable titan. I was a man alive, consumed by a genuine affection I didn't know I was capable of feeling. And she had walked away from it like it was a mere transaction. I didn't want to destroy her. I wanted to possess her. I wanted to wrap my arms around her waist again, to demand why she ran, and to force her to admit that she had felt the exact same world-shifting connection that I did. My search wasn't a hunt for an enemy; it was a desperate, unyielding crusade to bring my ghost back into the light. "I don't care what the streets whisper," I commanded, slamming my palm down onto the table with a force that echoed like a gunshot. "Double the bounty. Buy out the digital surveillance companies if you have to. Pull records from universities, transit authorities, residential apartments—every single institution in the country. If she is hiding in the shadows, I will buy the shadows." "Yes, sir," they chorused, quickly scrambling out of the boardroom as if fleeing for their lives. Once the doors clicked shut, the heavy silence returned. I reached into my breast pocket, pulling out a small, delicate silver earring—the only tangible proof that she hadn't been a hallucination, a piece of jewelry she had dropped in her frantic escape two years ago. I clutched it tightly in my fist until the metal bit into my palm. My jaw tightened, a lethal, unwavering determination settling into my blood. She could run to the ends of the earth. She could hide behind a million different masks. But I was Leo. I command empires, and I always get what belongs to me. Hide well, my sweet ghost, I thought, staring back out at the endless city. Because when I finally pull you out of the dark, I am never letting you go again.
