MARY'S POV........
"Uhm good afternoon sir," I said to him.
I was trying to reduce the tension between us. The office felt quiet. Too quiet.
"Oh uhm please sit," he said. His voice was calm.
I sat down. My hands were on my lap. I didn’t know why my heart was beating fast.
"So the CEO said he would want us to create a group," he said. He was staring at the document before him. "A group of people who will be able and available to travel to other places, so as to promote the hospital’s name."
I nodded slowly.
"So......" I said. I did not know where he was going with this.
"So I was looking into the nurses in the hospital," he continued. Now he was staring at me. "And I found you very interesting. And I also heard you just moved here."
I blinked. "So you are a stalker now," I said jokingly.
He laughed lightly. Just a small sound, but it made the room feel less heavy.
"Anyways I would just like to know if you are interested," he said. "And of course your pay will be high."
High pay. That meant a lot. That could help with rent and bills. But it also meant travel. It meant being away from home.
"Uhm... can I get back to you?" I asked. "I would like to discuss this with my family first."
"Sure. See you tomorrow then," he said.
"Thank you sir," I said and left his office.
Walking out, my mind was full. Travel? Other places? Promoting the hospital?
I had just moved here. I didn’t know if I was ready for something big like this.
But the pay... it could really help us.
I decided I would talk to talk to denny today or tomorrow
DENNY'S POV..........
I have been waiting for mom for a long time but she was still nowhere to be found.
The house was quiet. The TV was on but I wasn’t watching. I kept looking at the door, hoping to see her come in.
I immediately called her.
"Hey mom," I said as she picked the call.
"Hey honey what are you doing?" she asked. Her voice sounded tired.
"I’m good mum. Aren’t you on your way home?" I asked, curious.
"Oh I’m so sorry baby. I forgot to tell you that they changed my shift to evening," she said. "I’m so sorry baby."
I felt annoyed. I had waited all day. But I didn’t want her to feel bad. She was working hard for us.
"Okay mom. Talk to you later," I said.
"Okay darling," she said and I ended the call.
I felt empty. So I called Maya. We talked for a while. She made me laugh. She told me silly stories.
Before I knew it, I was asleep.
I must have fallen asleep on the couch. I didn’t even remember.
DAMIAN'S POV...........
I woke up to the sound of my alarm. Beep. Beep. Beep.
I got up from bed and went straight to the bathroom. The water was cold. It woke me up fast.
A few minutes later I was done and went downstairs.
Breakfast was ready on the table. Eggs. Bread. Juice. But I didn’t see dad.
So I walked to the table and saw a note.
I picked it up and read:
"Okay son, eat your breakfast and go to school. The driver will drop you off. I had work to do, that was why I left early. See you later after school. Bye."
I sat down. The chair made a small sound.
After reading the note I just sat down and started eating breakfast.
It was quiet without dad. But I was used to it. Work always came first for him.
DENNY'S POV.......
I woke up to the sound of my alarm.
I turned to the side of the bed and realized that I was on my bed and not the couch.
Wait. I remember talking to Maya. Then falling asleep on the couch while waiting for mom.
How did I get here?
I quickly picked up my phone and checked the time. And it was the next day.
"What.........................." I screamed.
I’m pretty sure mom heard it because she came rushing to my room.
"What's the problem?" she asked as she ran to my bed. Her hair was still a bit messy from work. She looked tired but kind.
"Oh mum, how did I end up on my bed?" I asked, still confused.
"Darling, is that why you are shouting?" she said with a small smile. "Well, if you must know, I came back from work and saw you on the couch so I helped you upstairs."
"Oh, I guess I was really tired," I said. I was still shocked. I slept from the afternoon to the next morning? That never happened to me.
"So darling, get ready and come down for dinner," she said and left my room.
I got up immediately and went to the bathroom to get ready. I washed my face. Brushed my teeth. Changed my clothes.
A few minutes later I was done with everything and I headed downstairs.
The food smelled good. Rice and stew. My favorite. We sat down to eat.
A few minutes after we started eating, mom stopped eating. I noticed something was wrong. Her face looked serious.
"Mom, are you okay?" I asked.
"Uhm darling, there’s something I want to discuss with you," she said.
"Okay mum, I’m all ears," I said as I dropped my spoon.
She took a deep breath.
"Okay... yesterday I was called by the manager," she said. "And he said the CEO wants a small group of people who will be ready to travel at any time. To go and help other hospitals, and also to improve the hospital’s name. And our pay will be bigger."
My heart dropped a little. Travel?
"So I just wanted to ask if you are okay with it," she continued. "And if you are not, I’ll cancel it."
I looked at her.
I didn’t want her to take a job like that. I didn’t want her to leave me all alone from time to time. The house would be too quiet. I would miss her a lot.
But I also didn’t want her to feel limited because of me. She has done so much for me.She gave up so much just to make sure I was okay.
And I think it’s time I start to return the favor.
I took her hand in mine.
"Mom, I just want you to know I support you in any decision you make," I said. "So just be yourself. And if you want to go for the team, I’m in full support."
I saw the way her face lit up. Like the sun came out after rain.
"Really darling?" she asked, very excited. Her eyes were shining.
"Yeah mom, I support you," I said.
She got up and gave me a big hug. A tight hug. The kind of hug that says thank you without words.
I hugged her back. Even though I was scared of being alone sometimes, I wanted her to be happy.
We sat back down and finished dinner.
