"Hey, Jethro!" Mrs. Layton called out to him. It was too late to turn around. Mrs. Layton was just a few feet away from him.
"Hi, Mrs. Layton, fancy seeing you here." He managed to say.
"I haven't seen you for a long time? Where have you been? I haven't seen you since you first came to the house. What happened?" She was talking a lot, obviously surprised and happy to see him.
Jethro was a bit surprised. Why does it feel like Mrs. Layton had no idea about what happened to him and Topaz? She looked like she was genuinely clueless.
It was a bit too late when Jethro realized that Mrs. Layton was carrying a lot of shopping bags.
"Oh, let me help you with that. He took several bags, almost all of them except for two small shopping bags.
"I went shopping for some stuff and supplies for the store." Mrs. Layton said.
"I'll walk you there." Jethro offered.
"Thanks a lot." Mrs. Layton tapped his shoulder. "We can have coffee too, catch up." She said and then suddenly realized something. "Oh, why are you here? Aren't you supposed to be in school?" Mrs. Layton asked.
"Ah, actually I skipped school," Jethro replied sheepishly.
"Oh. Don't worry. I can keep secrets. I skipped a few more classes than when I was your age, maybe even more often than you did." She shared, laughing a bit with the memory.
Jethro silently followed Mrs. Layton to Aroma Mocha.
The relaxing aroma of coffee outpoured outside the moment Mrs. Layton opened the door. Jethro's stomach could not help but grumble. He suddenly felt hungry.
There were a few people inside the shop when they arrived. The place usually gets crowded after working hours. None of the customers paid attention to them as they walked past the counter to the kitchen area. The cashier and three of the staff greeted Mrs. Layton on their way to the kitchen.
"Thank you, let me get that settled here." Mrs. Layto immediately took the bags from Jethro. "Stay, I will be making coffee. And we need to catch up. It has been too long since I last saw you." She started to go on and on. Somehow, it made Jethro feel a bit more comfortable. She was still kind to him. He felt that Mrs. Layton liked him as a person.
"Yeah, It has been too long," he managed to say.
"What happened? Did something go wrong between you and Topaz?" She asked while getting Jethro a cup of coffee.
"You really do not know?" Jethro asked.
"As a matter of fact, I have no idea." Mrs. Layton replied as she placed the coffee cup on the table in front of Jethro. "What happened between the two of you?" She sincerely wanted to know.
