I never expected to see Topaz like that after I helped her inside her room. Her mom was still not around. Mrs. Layton would not see her cry.
"Hey, why are you crying? Did something happen during class?"
"I can't live like this." She turned so that the pillows covered her face.
"Come one, it's just the first day. Everyone is adjusting."
"I can't adjust. I can't imagine that my life is like this right now. I can't even go to the bathroom." She said, mumbling under the pillows.
"You could have told me."
"And what, you're going to help me get to the girl's bathroom?" She snapped at Jethro, then suddenly realized what she had just said.
"I am sorry, I did not mean to snap at you like that." She buried her face back on her pillows.
"I could have asked the teachers, or the nurse, or someone else. I could have done something. I would rather do something than see you like this."
There was silence between the two of them. The sound of Topaz's sobbing started to fade away.
"Please don't tell Mom. I do not want her to think that I am miserable." Miserable felt too big to describe her current situation but Jethro knew that Topaz was feeling that way.
