Chapter 7: The Ledger Hack

1079 Words
Nora lay awake in the pitch blackness, the echo of Hector’s parting words vibrating through her chest. She tossed and turned against the heavy bedding, unable to quiet her racing mind. Her eyes stared at the thick obsidian drapes that separated her sleeping space from his. Beneath her skin, her internal wolf was on high alert, pacing the edges of her soul. The heavy air in the enclosed room felt suffocating, trapping her in the darkness. Outside, a roaring ocean storm battered the monolith's heavy exterior shutters with relentless fury. But the wolf didn't care about the storm; it was hyper-focused on the mate sleeping just across the room. Shut up, Nora commanded mentally, trying to force the beast back into the shadows. It didn't work—all they could think about, all they could feel, was him. His piercing eyes and the weight of his dominant aura haunted her thoughts. The raw power of his presence seemed to linger in the empty space above her. The low timbre of his voice replayed in a continuous loop in her head. Most of all, she couldn't forget the way he called her his little witch. She turned over again, staring blankly back toward the divide of the drapes. Yet her eyes continued to wander, itching with an urge just to see his face. Suddenly, her magic began to flare up again, reacting to the close proximity of her mate. Being so near to him made the energy completely impossible to control. A restless current surged through her veins, refusing to stay still. She tried to force the magic back down, but the energy refused to obey. A wave of panic hit her as the wild power spiraled out of her control. She wanted to ask for help, but she couldn't bring herself to do it. She took a deep breath and tried to force herself to fall asleep. It was useless; the magic was leading her directly toward him. Like a compass tracking north, her power began to stretch out, seeking his presence. She realized then that it was because of him that her magic was going wild. She wanted to yell out of pure frustration. Instead, she took slow, rhythmic breaths, desperate to ground her senses. For a second, she thought the magical current was finally calming down. But then, a strange echo began to resonate inside her mind. It projected a low frequency, vibrating like a signal looking for a destination. She had no idea what this manifestation was. Panic flooded her chest as she realized she had never done this before. Her mind went completely blank. Then, with a sudden rush, she was there. Boom. She was inside his mind. She began to hear his voice echoing in his own head. She wasn't sure what she was hearing at first. Then, the truth settled in—her magic had created a psychic breach into his mind. And Hector had no idea she was there. Fragments of his thoughts began to flood her awareness. She listened in awe as she saw his intentions in a completely new light. He wasn't plotting against her; he was designing a plan to keep her safe. He wanted nothing more than to protect her and keep her by his side. But then, the texture of his thoughts took a dark turn as his plotting deepened. He was actively planning an assault against the entire High Council. Nora found herself intrigued, unable to pull away from his mental landscape. She tried to stop listening, but she couldn't help it. It was intense and bloody, but the motivation was clear: he was protecting her. Hector’s mind was consumed with ways to keep Nora out of harm's way. He wouldn't let anyone hurt her. He would stop at nothing to ensure her safety. As he plotted against the High Council, the Alpha suddenly paused. He started to feel like he wasn't alone in his thoughts. He couldn't quite pin the sensation yet, but his defenses flared. His thoughts grew darker and more intense as he tried to flush out the intruder. He pushed his awareness outward, trying to feel who was in his mind. He was on the verge of a dark realization when a tiny gasp escaped her lips in the dark. The pieces clicked together instantly. He now knew that Nora was in his head. She had heard everything he had been thinking. He wanted to have fun with the situation, but he chose restraint. He spoke to her telepathically: "Go to sleep, Nora. My thoughts are too bloody for an innocent nurse." She mumbled a soft "sorry" through the link, her face burning. He waited in the silence, making sure she had finally drifted off. He got up and walked over to her side of the room. He looked down at her sleeping form, a silent sentinel in the dark. He reached out, taking a lock of her hair between his fingers. He quietly stated his vow: he would protect her no matter what. He stood there for a long time, watching over her. Finally, he returned to his side and continued his work. No one can touch what is mine, he thought, the claim locking into place. He wrote down his plans, the ink flowing as he organized his strategy. When he finally went to bed, he was still thinking of her. He tried to sleep, but the restlessness remained. He got back up once again. He returned to her side, drawn by an irresistible pull. He just wanted to look at her. She was his, and he would kill to keep it that way. He would do just about anything to ensure she stayed with him. He looked forward to the future they would build together. He walked to the window and looked out into the raging storm. No matter how the world fought back, he would always be there for her. The silver moonlight caught the sharp edge of his bladesmith knife on the table. He picked it up, tracing the ancient Drake family crest etched into the steel. The High Council thought they could demand her execution by tomorrow night. They didn't realize they were marching into a trap designed by a madman. I closed my eyes tightly on the other side of the room, pretending to be fast asleep. But my heart hammered against my ribs, knowing the true war for my survival had just begun.
