Quiet steps

Over the next few days, Liam Hale found himself unable to stay away. The Youth Leadership Summit continued, and he made sure to attend every session where Samantha was scheduled. During the second break the following day, he found her again near the piano. This time, he came prepared with two coffees in hand. “I hope you like lattes,” he said, offering her one with a careful smile. “I figured after that performance yesterday, you might need a little fuel.” Samantha accepted the cup, surprised but pleased. “Thank you, Mr. Hale. You didn’t have to do that.” “Call me Liam,” he replied gently. “And I wanted to. Your playing really moved me.” They talked for nearly twenty minutes — about music, her dreams of studying composition, and the challenges of balancing school with her passion. Liam listened with genuine interest, asking questions that showed he was truly paying attention. He shared stories from his own youth, carefully edited, about the pressure of living up to a family legacy. By the end of the summit, Liam had volunteered as a mentor for a small group that included Samantha. It was the perfect, legitimate reason to stay in her life. Over the following week, he began finding small, natural ways to spend time with her. He attended her school’s spring piano recital — sitting in the back row, anonymous at first. When Samantha took the stage and delivered a flawless performance, Liam felt a swell of pride so strong it nearly overwhelmed him. Afterward, he approached her in the lobby with a bouquet of flowers. “You were incredible,” he said sincerely. “I’m really proud of you.” Samantha beamed, though a flicker of curiosity crossed her face. “You came? That’s… really kind of you. My mom couldn’t make it tonight because of a big Velora deadline, but she’ll be so happy when I tell her.” Liam’s chest tightened at the mention of Isabella. “I’d love to hear more about your mom sometime. She sounds like an amazing woman.” As the days passed, their interactions deepened. Liam took Samantha for ice cream after one mentoring session. Another time, he arranged a private tour of Hale Global’s music and arts sponsorship program. Samantha opened up more — talking about growing up with a single mother who worked incredibly hard to build something successful from nothing. She spoke of her mother with deep love and admiration, but also of the quiet ache of not knowing her father. “I’ve always wondered about him,” she admitted softly during one conversation. “Mom says he wasn’t ready. I try not to let it bother me, but… sometimes it does.” Liam had to fight to keep his expression neutral. Guilt clawed at him. Every moment with Samantha made him realize how much he had missed — and how much he wanted to make up for lost time. He knew he couldn’t avoid it forever. The next step was inevitable. One evening, after dropping Samantha off at home following a mentoring dinner, Liam sat in his car outside their townhouse, staring at the warm lights glowing through the windows. He could see silhouettes moving inside — a mother and daughter sharing an ordinary evening. His hands gripped the steering wheel tightly. It was time to face Isabella.
