But you gave them less.” John grinned. “That’s so. I guess Harve likes quail better.” The Game Warden looked balefully at John, who refused to meet his eye. “Grouse are very wary birds, Professor,” he said, “and extremely suspicious of everything. There are only a few instances on record of their having fed at shelters. So we placed the grain in natural places. The grouse will not go near it even there unless they’re desperate for food. However, it might do them some good. If they don’t eat it, it won’t all be wasted. Squirrels and cottontail rabbits will be sure to find it.
