The Woman He Couldn’t Touch

561 Words
Lagos City – The Fenrir Group Headquarters Zaria adjusted the cuff of her silk blouse as she exited the boardroom, her heels echoing down the marble hallway. The East River deal had just closed in her favor another win. Another nail in the coffin of everyone who thought she’d fail. “Boss,” Amara called, jogging up beside her, breathless. “There’s… um… someone downstairs demanding to see you.” Zaria didn’t pause. “Tell them to schedule a meeting.” Amara hesitated. “It’s Alpha Kael.” Zaria stopped mid-step. The temperature in the hallway dropped. For a moment, neither woman moved. Then Zaria exhaled slowly. “Escort him to the glass conference room. Do not offer him water. Do not speak unless spoken to.” Amara blinked. “Y-Yes, ma’am.” ⸻ Ten minutes later… Kael sat at the end of the long glass table, his arms resting on the polished surface, posture tight. He looked older. Tired. Less sure of himself. Zaria entered without announcing herself. He stood up. She didn’t. She took her seat at the head of the table and crossed one leg over the other. He stared. “Zaria” “Miss Fenrir,” she corrected sharply. “That’s what the humans call me now.” A muscle ticked in his jaw. “You look… strong.” “I am,” she said flatly. “Why are you here?” Kael took a breath. “I made a mistake.” Zaria smiled coldly. “You’ll have to narrow it down. You’ve made several.” “I thought I wanted someone… gentler. Someone who wouldn’t challenge me. But I was wrong. You were the heart of this pack. My strength came from you.” She stood and walked slowly toward him, heels clicking like a countdown. “I begged you to trust me. To see me. You humiliated me in front of the council. You marked an omega in my place.” She stopped just inches from him, eyes gleaming like sharpened steel. “Now you want forgiveness?” “I want a second chance,” Kael whispered. The door opened. Soren Vexley stepped in impeccable in a navy suit, his presence instantly dominating the room. “Am I interrupting something, darling?” he asked Zaria smoothly, walking over to kiss her on the cheek. She didn’t stop him. Kael stiffened. Soren turned to him, all charm and venom. “You must be the man who gave up a diamond for glass. Shame.” Kael’s nostrils flared. “This is between me and her.” Zaria stepped between them, facing Kael. “No, Alpha,” she said with finality. “This isn’t between us anymore. You broke the bond. I buried it.” Kael’s voice dropped. “You were mine.” “I was never yours,” Zaria said, eyes cold and steady. “But you will remember that you lost me… to the version of me you feared most.” She turned her back to him. Kael’s voice broke. “Zaria…” But she didn’t turn around. “Escort him out,” she said, and Amara immediately appeared. As Kael was led out, Zaria stood silently, her arms crossed, her wolf purring beneath her skin. Soren walked up behind her. “That felt… satisfying.” Zaria gave a quiet laugh. “It was overdue.”
