Prologue Did they say goodbye without a hello? He gazed into warm brown eyes. ‘Thank you. Bye.’ She smiled. ‘See you again.’ If life unfurled like he’d planned, there wouldn’t be another time. He shook her hand. ‘Goodbye.’ A farewell without a greeting. The whitewashed home, treasuring his happy memories, fizzled away, and the road, turbulent as his life, jostled him in his seat. He pulled into the lay-by and studied the car behind him. ‘This is it.’ The seats of the black SUV were warm, a beckoning away from the ice the wind carried outside. ‘Hello.’ A greeting and a farewell… ‘I told you to stay away.’ He smirked. ‘I have no family. I have nothing to lose.’ ‘And you have no proof.’ ‘Who says? Every lie comes with a crack. Liquid seeps through cracks, and the reek inside alerts the world of misdeeds.’ ‘Shut up!’ He chuckled. ‘I don’t think it’ll be necessary. You’ll shut me up, won’t you?’ The blow came out of nowhere; he was waiting for it though. His nerves fired, and he shivered. ‘She’ll catch you. I swear to you. You can’t hide any longer.’ And then darkness swallowed him whole. Goodbye.
