38 PENN The sun is high. The Fire Scales are hundreds, like a flock of scaled, fire-breathing crows. Like blood splattered on the pale, yellow sky. Whiskers and his team of three have thrown a net over a smaller beast – but it is still as big as a warship. They didn’t anticipate that. Their net is not nearly wide enough to incapacitate it, so they try to bind just its head instead. They’ve shot the Fire Scale down with cross bows.
