Chapter Two

Adrianna put on a happy face. Giorna had called to see her by Three O'clock this afternoon, which is why she was in a haste to get the sweeping done outside. "I hope he won't mind" she chuckled easily, rubbing the bandage on her forehead. At 2:50, she had started upwards to head to his room, careful about who saw her, and thinking on the bright side. She reached the dead end of the hallway that was Giorna's room entrance and tapped lightly. "Come in," said a voice, but Adrianna froze. Why is a woman's voice coming from Giorna's room? I should run, thought Adrianna. If someone caught her here, by the Eldest's son's room, even at this bright hour, her heart sank at the potential repercussions that could follow. She imagined Claudia's face before her, handing out some unspeakable torture, one she couldn't bear. She had already let go of the handle before the voice called out again: "Who's there? You can come in" it said. Something clicked in Adrianna's head. That woman sounded familiar! "What the f**k are you doing?" came Giorna's deep baritone voice, soon after. "What?" giggled the mysterious woman. Adrianna turned back to the door, intrigued. It can't be, right? Her hands went back to the door handle, and against all rationality and fear that the woman inside was some big name in the family, she brought down the handle and opened the door. And came face to face with a riveting sight. Pinned against one of the French windows, was a slender woman with black hair, and in the same white maid aprons as Adrianna. Giorna was tending to his bathrobe as if he had been naked just a few seconds ago. "s**t! Adrianna! What are you doing here?" he asked, checking his watch. "Adrianna?" asked the woman turning back. "Oh, it is you." she smiled. Leila! cried Adrianna inwardly. Leila was her colleague's maid there in the Desantos Manor. Although, her first arrival there had been more reputable than Adrianna's. She was handpicked from a local establishment and didn't have any stain on her family's character. But the fact that they had the same jobs throughout the manor, had allowed them to bond to a certain degree. Or so Adrianna thought. She turned her eyes to GIORNA, and murmured sheepishly: "What's - what's going on?" Even if she did have an inkling of what indeed had been going on, she wanted to hear him say it, or at least deceive herself for a few more seconds. Leila laughed, looking from Adrianna and then to Giorna. "You haven't told her yet?" she asked. "Shut up. I was supposed to tell her this afternoon. By exactly Three O' clock." grumbled Giorna. "I gave you a time for a reason, Adrianna!" "Tell me what, Giorna?" Adrianna asked, focusing on him, trying to ignore Leila's presence that continued to suggest the obvious. Giorna strolled to his home office by the left and sat down. Leila followed him, strutting her hips for Adrianna to see, and sitting on his lap. He took a cigarette from the table, lit it, and inhaled deeply. "Let's forget the past four years, Adrianna" he spoke. A gasp of pain escaped Adrianna's pursed lips, and she put her hands together. "W- what?" she exhaled. Giorna massaged around his temple, annoyed. "It's too much to explain to you," he said. "Are you saying I'm dumb?" rallied Adrianna. Giorna sat up almost immediately, his brows rising in anger. "Let me put it so you can understand. I'm inheriting the family soon. I've spoken with my father and the rest of the CAPOs. It could be anytime now. And you" He pointed to her but hesitated. "Say it, you coward." cried Adrianna, almost yelling. Red fury lit Giorna's eyes. "Coward?! You're the wretched one, Adrianna. I heard what's supposed to happen to you. You want me to be harsh, don't you? No matter how you look at it, I'm the head of a family. I shouldn't be breathing the same air as you." he asserted. "Giorna--" reminded Adrianna "You love me. Remember?" She pulled out something from her apron. A trinket of silver. Her hands shivered as she held it before him. "Remember? You gave this to me on my birthday two years ago. Even when you were out of the country. You told me to think about it anytime I was alone when I felt I didn't have anyone. You didn't want me to be alone. And the first aid kit--" "Oh, please, Adrianna. I was a kid, Adrianna. I would've said anything. That is just a cheap piece of trinket I found lying about my cousin's bedroom. And the first aid thing is because I was just embarrassed for you! I mean, look at your head. What did you do this time again?! You haven't learned to know your place, and you've been here five years!" dismissed Giorna. Adrianna shook her head. Tears she had held back when Claudia struck her, began to escape drop by drop. "No, no, no. You care about me, Giorna. You care--" Leila yawned. "You really can't take a hint, can you, Adry?" " Leila. What did you do?!" asked Adrianna. Leila only grinned and winked. "She's a maid same as me! Why are you with her then?" demanded Adrianna. Leila turned to Adrianna. "That's bold! Do you think we're on the same level? I was recommended here by another family. My sisters are all doing well in their separate posts. One is already even a head maid. Can that compare to you that came from the gutters?!" Adrianna couldn't believe this was the same girl she had told some of her problems, shared stories, rooms, and even some personal belongings. "And another thing. I heard from a little birdie, that you're about to become a w***e. By your 21st birthday, right?" Adrianna bowed her head in shame. How did Leila find out about that?! "I kind of feel sorry, too. This is all happening because of your pauper dad." "Shut your mouth, Leila!" warned Adrianna. "Don't you turn 21 in a few months? Do you think it's fair to be cuddling up to Giorna, even when you know your fate?" Adrianna looked up into his eyes. "Giorna, I didn't know. I just found out two months ago. It's not my fault--" "Keep quiet, the both of you! Adrianna--" Giorna's elbow moved to relax back into the chair, and he knocked over his white ceramic ashtray. He clicked his tongue and bent to pick it up, but Leila stopped him. "But what are you doing, my prince? You are the eldest son of the family, you can't be seen doing that. There are others meant to do it for you..." trailed off Leila, her eyes pointing at Adrianna. Giorna understood and also looked at Adrianna. "Adrianna. Come clean this up" he instructed.
