PEGGY'S POV
"She's so beautiful!" yelled a woman to my left. At the same time, another woman laughed.
"Look at how tacky her shoes are. She's nothing but a shameless, broke gold digger." "I heard Austin didn't give her any money for her wedding dress.
That was the last test of how loyal she was." "That explains that ill-fitting dress," laughed the second woman. "Be quiet, people. Axel is staring at us."
When someone mentioned my stepbrother's name, I turned around and ran away from the women who were talking about him. He was glaring, but not at the old women who were chatting, he was glaring at me.
His fiery grey eyes were burning holes in the side of my head as one of his men told whispered something important that could wait before the wedding was over.
There was a tiny frown on my face so that he couldn't say I was rude, and blow my head off with a bullet.
What does he want now?
If i were to be him i would erase the thought of that night from my head and not make it so obvious for the wbole Chuurch to figure out with that state he keeps giving me.
I was used to people staring at me, sometimes with admiration and most of the time with horror, but that wasn't the point.
The point is that I knew how to deal with being stared at, even if they were being unbearably obvious about it. I knew how to ignore it and keep going about my business, but Axel's glare made it impossible.
Thankfully, the ceremony ended without a fight, and I found myself on the lawn of the fancy Dawson estate, sipping orange juice and trying to act like I was enjoying the reception, even though I was sick and couldn't go home.
Martha told me not to leave before I properly introduced myself to the family, and I knew I shouldn't drink to forget how bad things were.
People were gossiping and i was getting more and more unhappy as the seconds went by, and I was questioning the decisions I had made in my life that led to this point.
The only reason I hadn't lost it yet and gone through the door was because Axel wasn't following me around like a big, dark cloud. Knowing him and the work he does, I was sure he was busy hacking some poor man to death somewhere.
I didn't like being a part of this family, I scowled. Hopefully, I won't have to deal with the Dawsons anymore after today is over.
I couldn't look at this place's wealth without picturing red, splotchy blood and the loud bangs of gunshots.
I'm sure that if I peeled off the paint on the walls, the blood of their enemies and victims would spill out in its place. I sipped more juice and closed my eyes to block out the sound of my heart beating.
I really couldn't wait for the day to end. I was already looking forward to going back to my small flat, getting into bed in nothing but knickers and a big t-shirt and binge-watching The Devil Wears Prada for the rest of the holiday, even though I've already seen it a million times.
I was in a dream world where everything was warm and cosy when Martha's loud call woke me up. "Come here, baby, come and say hi to the family." Before I turned around to meet my new family, I swallowed and put on a fake as-f**k smile.
Austin was standing tall, proud, and imposing, with his arm around Martha's slim waist.
That man scares me. He had thick eyebrows, dark eyes that looked worn down by age, and a beard and moustache that made it look like he was always glaring at someone.
Even though I meant well, I couldn't stop my hands from shaking. It was dark, and all I could hear was the bang of a gun.
Martha's voice broke through the murky water, "This is my daughter Peggy." I clenched my fist, trying not to move around like a scared teenager about to get in trouble with her worst teacher.
I remembered to say, "Nice to meet you," before the awkward silence got worse. "Is this your daughter?" he asked in a deep, heavy voice.
"She doesn't look anything like you, Stellina." Martha laughed dryly and gave Austin a soft pat on the chest.
"That's because was adopted when Theo really needed a girl child." "That's your ex-husband, Theo." Austin asked.
"Yes. Remember that we lost him in a car accident?" Austin smiled and kissed Martha on the forehead. "Of
course, I remember, Tesoro."
He then turned to me and said, "Welcome to the family, Peggy. I hope you won't cause us any trouble now that you're a part of it. We Dawsons have to keep up a certain image."
With a tight smile, I thought about what Martha would probably had told him about me.
"I won't, Sir."
"Call me Austin," he said, cutting me off.
"We're family now, so don't do that."
Nancy, Austin's daughter, was typing away on her phone while she was lost in her own world. I smiled and nodded and looked at her.
Austin and Martha had already left to do kerp the other guest company.
I poked her and smiled , "Hi, girl! It's nice to meet you.
My name is Peggy." She looked up from her phone and at me like I was a piece of s**t.
Her eyes went cold as she gave me a sickly sweet smile and said, "The pleasure is all mine, Peggy.Your dress is ...nice."
When I looked down at my gold sequin dress, it was two sizes too small, but it was cute, it had been on sale, and I wore it with my favourite boots.
"What's wrong with it?" I asked. "Oh, nothing," she shrugged. "If your goal is to look like a slut, that is." She then turned back to her phone and walked away.
My left eye twitched. Old wanted to chase her down and have the last laugh. New knew that if our conversation turned into a full-on fight, she would be in big trouble.
I had already messed up once by getting into bed with my new stepbrother, so I just had to get through today without any more fights. Suddenly, screams and shouts came from one area of the courtyard.
I couldn't help but look and saw that, of all people, Axel was holding a poor innocent man at gunpoint.
The yard was dead silent until it was so quiet that everyone could hear him whisper, "Repeat what you said about her." "Please don't, I don't, I can't-" "Leonard , don't waste my time."
Leonard wasn't doing anything useful with his time.
BANG.
The gunshot made me shake, and orange juice got all over my hand.
As Leonard 's blood and brain matter hit the ground, more than one person screamed. See? I told you my new stepbrother was a crazy, gun-toting nut.
I was kidding myself when I thought I could get through the day without getting drunk. I let out a sigh as I drained the rest of my orange juice and went to drink something else .
