Chapter 2: The Stranger at the Door

2563 Words
The doorknob turned slowly. Once. Twice. Then the lock clicked. Sylvia's blood ran cold. She hadn't opened the door. She hadn't invited anyone over. So who had a key? She backed away instinctively, her trembling hands searched the kitchen counter until they found the handle of a knife. Her grip tightened. The door creaked open. A tall man stepped inside. He was dressed in black from head to toe, rainwater dripping from his coat onto the polished floor. His sharp jaw was covered with a day's worth of stubble, and his piercing dark eyes swept across the apartment before settling on Sylvia. For a brief moment, neither of them spoke. "Who are you?" Sylvia demanded, raising the knife. The stranger remained calm. Instead of answering, he quietly shut the door behind him and locked it. "I asked you a question!" Sylvia shouted. "You need to leave," he said. She stared at him in disbelief. "You break into my apartment and you're telling me to leave?" "If you want to stay alive, you'll come with me." Her heart skipped. Those were almost the exact words the mysterious caller had said over the phone. "Who sent you?" she asked. "No one." "Stop lying!" "I don't have time to explain." "Then make time!" He took one careful step toward her. Sylvia lifted the knife higher. "I swear I'll use this." "I know." His calmness unsettled her more than anger would have. His eyes drifted across the apartment. The broken wine glasses. The ruined anniversary dinner. The smashed cake. Finally, they rested on the phone lying on the floor, its screen still displaying the photograph of Daniel kissing another woman. Something changed in his expression. Regret. Real regret. "I'm sorry," he said quietly. Sylvia frowned. "What?" "I'm sorry you had to find out like this." "You know Daniel?" Before he could answer— BOOM! A thunderous explosion shook the entire apartment building. The windows rattled violently. The lights flickered. Car alarms screamed outside. Adrian rushed to the window and carefully pulled the curtain aside. His expression darkened instantly. "They're early." "They?" Sylvia whispered. He looked outside. Three black SUVs had surrounded the building. Men dressed in black tactical gear stepped out one after another, speaking into radios while scanning every floor. One of them pointed directly toward Sylvia's apartment. "They've found you." Sylvia felt her knees weaken. "What is happening? Who are these people?" Adrian turned to face her. "You've asked me that twice already." He reached inside his coat. Sylvia tightened her grip on the knife. Instead of a weapon, he pulled out an old, worn photograph. He handed it to her. Her hands trembled as she looked at it. It was the same childhood photograph she'd found in the mysterious envelope. But this one wasn't torn. Standing beside eight-year-old Sylvia was a young boy, smiling brightly. She looked back at the stranger. "You don't remember me, do you?" he asked softly. Sylvia searched his face. His eyes. His voice. Nothing. "Should I?" A sad smile crossed his face. "My name is Adrian." He paused. "I made your father a promise twenty years ago." Before Sylvia could ask what he meant— The entire apartment was swallowed by darkness. Every light went out. Then... A tiny red dot appeared on Adrian's chest. Another appeared on his shoulder. Then a third. Sniper lasers. Adrian's eyes widened. "Get down!" He lunged toward Sylvia just as the living room window exploded inward in a shower of glass. --- Part 2 The window exploded. Glass rained across the living room like razor-sharp ice. Adrian tackled Sylvia to the floor just as another shot tore through the wall where she had been standing only seconds earlier. The deafening crack of gunfire echoed through the apartment. Sylvia screamed. "What is happening?" she cried, her voice breaking. Adrian didn't answer. Instead, he grabbed her wrist and pulled her toward the hallway. "Move!" "I'm not going anywhere until you tell me what's going on!" "You can hate me later." He shoved her behind a concrete pillar just as another bullet shattered the framed painting hanging above the couch. Pieces of wood and glass scattered everywhere. Sylvia covered her ears. Her entire body trembled. "This can't be real..." "It is," Adrian replied grimly. He carefully peered around the corner. Outside, men dressed in black tactical gear were surrounding the apartment building. Each carried weapons. Each moved with terrifying precision. One of them spoke into a radio. "Target confirmed. She's still inside." Sylvia's breath caught. Target? "They're talking about me..." Adrian looked at her. "Yes." "But... I don't even know them!" "They know you." Before Sylvia could ask another question, Adrian pulled a small earpiece from his pocket. A voice crackled through it. "They've entered the building." "How many?" Adrian asked. "Six inside. More outside." "We're outnumbered." "By a lot." The connection went dead. Sylvia stared at him. "Who were you talking to?" "A friend." "You have friends who casually tell you armed men are coming to kill us?" He almost smiled. "I wish that sounded strange to me." A loud crash echoed from the apartment entrance. Someone had kicked the front door. Once. Twice. The wooden frame groaned under the impact. "They're trying to get in!" Sylvia whispered. Adrian's expression hardened. "No..." "They're making sure we know they're here." Another violent kick. The hinges began to crack. Sylvia felt panic rising in her chest. "We need to call the police!" "They won't get here in time." "Then what do we do?" Adrian looked toward the back of the apartment. "There should be a fire escape." "You know the layout?" "I studied it." She stared at him. "You studied my apartment?" "I studied how to keep you alive." Those words sent a chill through her. "Who are you?" Adrian hesitated. Then, quietly, he said, "I've been protecting you for years." Sylvia's eyes widened. "What?" "I watched from a distance." "No..." "I followed your routines." "No!" "I made sure no one got close enough to hurt you." "Stop lying!" "I'm not." Her mind raced. The black SUV. The strange messages. The feeling of always being watched. It wasn't her imagination. Someone really had been watching her. "You're insane," she whispered. "Maybe." "But I'm the reason you're still breathing." Before Sylvia could respond— CRASH! The front door burst open. Heavy footsteps thundered through the apartment. A man's voice echoed through the living room. "Search every room!" Another voice replied, "She's still here." Adrian grabbed Sylvia's hand. "Run." They sprinted toward the back hallway. Behind them, flashlights swept across the apartment. One beam landed on the shattered dining table. Another reached the hallway entrance. "There!" "They're moving!" Gunfire erupted again. Bullets tore into the walls around them. Plaster exploded into the air. Sylvia stumbled. Adrian caught her before she hit the floor. "Hurry!" They reached the kitchen. Adrian threw open the back window leading to the narrow fire escape. Cold rain poured inside. Below them was a six-story drop. Sylvia's stomach twisted. "I can't do this." "You can." "I'll fall!" "You won't." "How can you be so sure?" Adrian looked her straight in the eyes. "Because if I have to choose between your life and mine..." He stepped onto the fire escape and extended his hand. "...I'll choose yours every single time." Before Sylvia could take his hand— A laser sight appeared on her chest. Someone had found them. A voice shouted from the darkness below. "Don't let her escape!" A gunshot rang out. Adrian's eyes widened. He shoved Sylvia with all his strength. She fell onto the fire escape— As Adrian cried out in pain. A dark stain spread across his shirt. He had been shot. Part 3 Adrian collapsed to one knee. His hand immediately pressed against the wound on his shoulder as blood seeped through his fingers. "Adrian!" Sylvia screamed. "I'm fine," he gritted through clenched teeth. "You've been shot!" "It's just my shoulder." Before she could respond, another bullet struck the metal railing inches from her face. CLANG! Sparks flew into the air. "Move!" Adrian shouted. He grabbed her wrist and pulled her down the narrow fire escape. The old metal stairs groaned beneath their weight. Behind them, the apartment window shattered completely. Armed men climbed through the broken glass. "There!" one of them yelled. "They're escaping!" A hail of bullets rained down. The metal staircase echoed with every impact. Sylvia covered her head as pieces of rusted metal broke away. "We're going to die!" she cried. "No," Adrian said firmly. "Not tonight." They reached the fifth-floor landing. Adrian suddenly stopped. "What are you doing?" Sylvia asked. Instead of answering, he pulled a small black object from his pocket. He pressed a button. Three seconds later— BOOM! A deafening explosion erupted above them. The upper section of the fire escape collapsed with a thunderous crash. The armed men barely jumped back in time. Their path was blocked. Smoke filled the air. Adrian grabbed Sylvia's hand again. "Now!" They continued down the remaining flights. By the time they reached the ground, Sylvia's lungs burned from exhaustion. Rain poured heavily, soaking them within seconds. The streets were almost deserted. In the distance, sirens wailed. "They're coming!" Sylvia said. Adrian shook his head. "Not for us." A black motorcycle sped around the corner and stopped directly in front of them. The rider wore a full-face helmet. "You took your time," the rider said. "I ran into complications," Adrian replied. The rider's eyes shifted toward Sylvia. "So this is her." Sylvia stepped back. "Who are you people?" Neither of them answered. Adrian climbed onto the motorcycle and held out his hand. "Get on." "I'm not going anywhere with strangers!" "You don't have a choice." "I do!" Another black SUV screeched into the street behind them. Its tires sprayed water across the road. Four armed men jumped out. "There she is!" The rider cursed under his breath. "We're out of time." Adrian looked directly into Sylvia's eyes. "I know every reason you have not to trust me." His voice was calm despite the blood soaking his shirt. "But ask yourself one question..." "If I wanted to hurt you..." He gestured toward the men charging toward them. "...why would they be trying so hard to kill me too?" Sylvia looked from Adrian... ...to the armed men... ...then back again. Nothing made sense anymore. Her entire life had turned upside down in less than an hour. "Five seconds," Adrian said. "That's all we have." The men were getting closer. One raised his weapon. Another shouted into his radio. "Don't let them leave!" Sylvia closed her eyes for one brief moment. When she opened them again... She made her choice. She grabbed Adrian's hand. Before she could climb onto the motorcycle— A familiar voice echoed across the street. "Sylvia!" She froze. Her heart nearly stopped. Standing beside one of the black SUVs... Completely unharmed... Was Daniel. He wasn't tied up. He wasn't being threatened. He was calmly talking to the leader of the armed men. Then... Daniel pointed directly at Sylvia. "There she is." --- Part 4 "There she is." The words echoed through the rain. Sylvia's entire body froze. Her eyes locked on Daniel. He stood beside the black SUV, rain dripping from his dark jacket. His face was expressionless—almost cold. For a heartbeat, neither of them moved. "Daniel..." she whispered. He looked at her. There was no relief in his eyes. No guilt. No surprise. Nothing. It was as though she meant absolutely nothing to him. "What are you doing?" Sylvia cried. "Who are these people?" Daniel opened his mouth to answer— "Move!" Adrian roared. He grabbed Sylvia and pulled her behind the motorcycle just as a bullet tore through the air. BANG! The headlight exploded into a shower of glass. The rider cursed. "They're shooting!" Three more gunshots followed. The street erupted into chaos. People screamed and ran for cover. Car alarms blared from every direction. The rider kicked the motorcycle to life. "Get on!" This time Sylvia didn't argue. She climbed on behind Adrian, wrapping her arms around him just as the motorcycle shot forward. The tires skidded across the wet road before finding their grip. Behind them— Engines roared. "They're following us!" the rider shouted. Sylvia turned. Three black SUVs were racing after them. Their headlights cut through the rain like hunting wolves. One SUV swerved onto the sidewalk, knocking over trash bins and sending pedestrians running. "They're insane!" "They're desperate," Adrian replied. The motorcycle sped through traffic, weaving between cars. A truck suddenly pulled into the intersection. "Hold on!" the rider yelled. He leaned hard to the left. The motorcycle squeezed through a gap so narrow Sylvia was certain they would crash. She shut her eyes. When she opened them again, they were still alive. But the chase wasn't over. One SUV accelerated and rammed the back of another car. Metal screamed. The wreck blocked half the road. "They don't care who gets hurt," Sylvia gasped. "No," Adrian said quietly. "They only care about getting you." She looked at him. "Why?" He didn't answer. Instead, he reached into his coat and pulled out a small silver pendant hanging from a chain. Rain washed over it. Sylvia's breath caught. She knew that pendant. She had seen it before. Not in person... In an old photograph her mother kept hidden inside a family album. "My mother has that..." she whispered. Adrian looked at her. "I know." "How?" Before he could answer— The rider suddenly shouted, "Brace yourselves!" A massive trailer swerved across the highway, blocking every lane. There was nowhere to go. The motorcycle raced toward it at terrifying speed. Sylvia screamed. At the very last second, the rider veered onto a narrow service road hidden between two abandoned warehouses. The SUVs couldn't turn fast enough. One slammed into the trailer. Another spun out of control. The third disappeared behind a cloud of smoke. For a brief moment... Silence. "We lost them," Sylvia whispered. "No," Adrian said, staring into the darkness ahead. "We didn't." The rider slowly brought the motorcycle to a stop. The road ended at an abandoned warehouse. Every light inside was off. The place looked deserted. Too deserted. Adrian climbed off the bike, his injured shoulder bleeding heavily. He stared at the warehouse entrance. His face lost all color. "No..." "What?" Sylvia asked. His voice was barely a whisper. "This isn't our safe house." The rider removed his helmet. Fear filled his eyes. "It can't be..." The warehouse doors creaked open on their own. One... Then the other. A single figure stepped out. Dressed in black. Face hidden beneath a hood. The figure began clapping slowly. "Impressive," the stranger said. "I almost thought you'd escape this time." Adrian instinctively stepped in front of Sylvia. His voice was filled with dread. "You..." The hooded figure smiled. "I've been waiting for both of you." Then the stranger looked directly at Sylvia and said, > "Tell me, Sylvia... did your parents ever explain why they died?" Sylvia's heart stopped. "What... did you just say?" The stranger laughed softly. "I suppose it's time you learned the truth." End of Chapter 2. --- Who is the hooded stranger? What really happened to Sylvia's parents? Why is Sylvia being hunted? Why does Adrian know her family? Is the "safe house" a trap?
