Episode 5: Black Box

1080 Words
Undisclosed Military Black Site, South Korea – 48 Hours After Outbreak The helicopter’s rotators thundered as soldiers in hazmat suits dragged Ji-eun into a concrete compound buried beneath Mount Bukhan. Min-jun fought against his restraints, the muzzle of a rifle digging into his spine. “Where are you taking her?!” he roared. “Somewhere you can’t follow,” a soldier replied, shoving him into a fluorescent-lit interrogation room. The door locked with a hydraulic hiss. On the steel table lay a dossier: PROJECT CHIMERA – PHASE 3 APPROVED. Inside were photos of Ji-eun’s lab, Dr. Park’s melted corpse, and a Soviet-era document stamped with Korean insignia. “The prion is not the enemy,” it read. “It is the key to evolution.” The door opened. A woman in a crisp uniform entered, her face eerily familiar. General Lee Soo-jin—Ji-eun’s mother. “Hello, Officer Kim,” she said. “Let’s discuss your girlfriend’s… condition.” The Lab Ji-eun awoke strapped to a tilted glass panel, her limbs pierced with IVs draining shimmering blue blood. Around her, technicians in sealed suits monitored holographic screens displaying her genome—40% human, 60% unidentified. “Welcome back, Dr. Lee,” General Lee’s voice booded from speakers. “You’ve exceeded our expectations.” “Mother?” Ji-eun strained against the restraints. “You knew about the prion?” “We cultivated it. A controlled burn to weed out the weak.” The general’s face appeared on a viewscreen, icy and triumphant. “The Soviets’ mistake was rushing Chimera. We refined it—accelerated natural selection. Survivors like you will inherit the Earth.” Ji-eun’s IV lines pulsed as the prion cluster in her chest writhed, whispering: Min-jun. Min-jun. Min-jun. “You’re insane,” Ji-eun hissed. “No. Pragmatic. The climate crisis? Overpopulation? Solved in 48 hours.” General Lee leaned closer. “But you’re special. Your mutation allows you to control the infected. You’ll lead our new world order.” “Go to hell.” “Already there.” The general nodded to a technician. “Begin cognitive overwrite.” Flashback: 10 Years Earlier A teenage Ji-eun sat at a military banquet, picking at her food while her mother lectured a table of generals: “Humanity’s greatest threat is itself. To survive, we must become more than human.” Later, in the parking lot, Ji-eun snapped: “Why do you always talk like we’re at war?” General Lee cupped her daughter’s face. “Because wars are the only things that matter.” Now Min-jun flipped the interrogation table, pinning General Lee against the wall. “Where is she?!” The general didn’t flinch. “You love her. How… quaint.” She tapped her wristwatch. A hologram bloomed—a live feed of Ji-eun convulsing as machines pumped silver liquid into her veins. “That’s nanotech rewriting her neural pathways. In an hour, she’ll forget your name. But you’ll watch.” Min-jun’s fist connected with her jaw. Alarms blared. The Overwrite Ji-eun’s mind fractured. Memory 1: Min-jun laughing as he walked her home, snowflakes catching in his hair. Delete. Memory 2: His kiss in the koi pond, desperation and hope tangled together. Delete. Memory 3: His voice— “Don’t you dare turn on me.” Delete— No. The prion cluster surged, flooding her synapses with raw rage. Ji-eun’s eyes turned cobalt. The lab’s glass shattered. Breakout Min-jun sprinted through the compound, dodging bullets. He followed the screams—technicians fleeing a hallway strewn with mangled corpses. At the end, bathed in emergency lights, stood Ji-eun. Her hair floated as if underwater, blue electricity arcing between her fingers. “Ji-eun!” She turned. Recognition flickered. “M-Min-jun… run.” The prion’s voice boomed from her mouth: “SHE IS OURS NOW.” He grabbed her face. “Fight it!” She trembled, tears evaporating into steam. “I don’t want to hurt you.” “Then don’t.” He kissed her, ignoring the heat scorching his lips. The prion screamed. The General’s Gambit General Lee watched from the control room, blood trickling from her split lip. “Activate Alpha Wave.” A technician hesitated. “But the hive mind could go critical—” “Do it.” The compound shook as a low-frequency pulse erupted. Ji-eun collapsed, clutching her skull. On the monitors, the infected horde outside writhed—then stilled. “What did you do?” Min-jun demanded, cradling Ji-eun. “Reset the hive,” General Lee said calmly. “Now it answers to me.” Ji-eun gasped, her eyes clearing. “The pulse… it’s a neural leash. She’s controlling them.” “And you,” the general said. “But don’t worry. You’ll both serve the Republic.” Soldiers stormed in. The Choice Locked in a cell, Min-jun traced the burn scars on Ji-eun’s collarbone. “Can you override her control?” Ji-eun pressed her palm to the wall. The concrete crumbled slightly. “The prion’s adapting. But if I push too hard…” “You’ll lose yourself.” She met his gaze. “What’s left to lose?” He clasped her hand. “Then we burn it all down.” Eclipse At midnight, Ji-eun unleashed a psychic scream. The compound’s lights exploded. Infected soldiers clawed through vents. General Lee’s control room descended into chaos as the horde turned—against her. “Impossible!” the general snarled. Ji-eun appeared on the viewscreen, eyes like collapsing stars. “You wanted evolution? Here it is.” The prion cluster burst from her chest—a winged, larval thing with Min-jun’s face—and tore through the control room’s glass. Escape Min-jun and Ji-eun fled into the mountain forest, the compound imploding behind them. The prion creature circled overhead before dissolving into ash. “It wanted to protect you,” Ji-eun said, exhausted. “Like a… twisted guardian angel.” Min-jun kissed her singed hair. “Where now?” She touched her chest—the infection’s mark glowing beneath her skin. “The hive’s still in me. And it’s scared.” “Of what?” A new voice answered: “Us.” From the trees emerged three figures—their eyes blue, veins shimmering gold. Evolved. End of Episode 5 Next episode teaser: The evolved reveal a chilling prophecy: Ji-eun’s prion is the first of many “generations” designed to consume the world. Meanwhile, General Lee survives—with a new hive army and a personal vendetta.
