Chapter- 15 The Clock Tower

1398 Words
Nicko's POV: I stood at the top of the tower, looking out over the town I was forced to abandon. The wind up here is different—it’s colder, and it carries the scent of the sea. I looked at the Silver Watch Julian had given Elena, now resting on the wooden workbench. Then, I pulled out my Antique Pocket Watch. For ten-year-old Nicko, the tower was a place of high-altitude secrets. He used to hide here to escape the suffocating expectations of his father, Nickolas Agrapino. He saw his father hand a lighter to Captain Veloso (Jullian’s father). He saw the hierarchy of the "Council of Seven" in action. Nicko tried to pull the emergency lever to ring the bell and wake the town, but he was too small. The gears jammed, the clock stopped at 11:59 PM, and he watched the world burn in total silence. "I didn't just lose my best friend that night. I lost the ability to move forward. For ten years, I've been stuck in that one minute before midnight." For Jullian, the tower was a crime scene he had to sanitize. After the fire, he spent years bringing Elena here, trying to "re-brand" her trauma as peace. Four years after the fire, a teenage Jullian brought a confused Elena to the tower. She was experiencing her first "Amnesia Migraine." He told her the tower was just an old ruin and that the stopped clock was a sign that "time doesn't matter when we're together." He used the beauty of the view to distract her from the charred remains of her father’s manor visible in the distance. "I thought if I gave her a new rhythm to follow—the tick of my watch instead of the beat of the tower—she would never have to remember that my father was the one who let hers die." For Elena, the tower was a sensory trigger. The smell of oil, the cold stone, and the sound of the wind were the "missing notes" of her life. Standing between Nicko and Jullian, the two halves of her life finally click into place. She realizes that the Unfinished Symphony her father wrote wasn't for a piano—it was a mechanical score for the tower’s gears. The "notes" were instructions on how to set the weights to unlock the secret cache She remembers being a toddler, held in her father Eduardo’s arms as he wound the clock. He whispered to her that "Time is the only thing the powerful can't buy, unless we let them stop it." When the watches are placed into the pendulum, the Great Clock finally ticks to 12:00 AM. The "Midnight" is no longer missing. The sound of the bell ringing for the first time in nearly a decade signals to Sto. Domingo that the Magdallena era has returned. In the years just before the accident, while Nicko was being groomed for the Council, Julian was the one who was actually there. He was the one who walked her home, the one who caught her when she tripped. He "won" her heart not through a grand gesture, but through presence. The fire didn't just burn the Magdallena Manor; it burned Elena's heart clean. When she woke up in the hospital, the name "Nicko" was gone. The boy under the Narra tree was a ghost. Julian saw an opportunity born of desperation: He knew that if she remembered the truth, she would remember his father’s betrayal. So, he used his "win" to build a protective wall. He became her everything because he was the only thing left. "I didn't steal her memory," Julian told himself every night. "I just gave her a version of the truth that wouldn't kill her." Julian stands near the silver watch. To him, Elena’s amnesia is a mercy. He looks at her and sees the woman he has spent the last five years healing, feeding, and loving. As the gears of the Great Clock begin to turn, the triangle is forced to resolve. "You 'won' her because I was gone, Julian!" Nicko shouts over the groaning iron. "You took a broken girl and told her a fairy tale!" "I 'won' her because I was the one who stayed!" Julian retorts, his hand gripping the silver watch. "I was the one who held her while she screamed for a father she couldn't name. Where were you? You were in Spain, living your 'Prince' life while she was a ghost!" Elena looks at the silver watch Julian gave her, then at the scarred knuckles of Nicko. The amnesia is like a fog thinning under the morning sun. "You both love a version of me that doesn't exist anymore," Elena whispers. She reaches out and touches the clock’s pendulum. "Julian, you love the girl you could hide. Nicko, you love the girl you lost. But who am I without the lies, and who am I without the grief?" Elena’s knees buckle. She reaches out, her left hand grabbing the cold brass of the clock’s frame, her right hand clutching the silver watch Julian gave her. First comes the sound. It’s not the ticking of the clock. It’s the sound of a piano. The Unfinished Symphony—but this time, it’s not just a melody; it’s her father’s voice humming along. "Listen to the rhythm, Elena. Even if the world stops, the heart keeps time." Then comes the smell. The sterile scent of the clinic and the leather of Julian’s car vanish. They are replaced by the suffocating smell of smoke and burnt Narra wood. She looks at Julian, but his face begins to flicker. One moment he is the handsome man who brought her flowers; the next, he is the terrified teenager standing in the shadow of his father’s police cruiser, watching her house burn. She looks at Nicko. The stranger with the scarred knuckles begins to "fill in." The shadows of the tower outline the boy who used to share his White Rabbit candies with her. Elena gasps, her eyes dilating. She remembers the 11:59 Midnight clearly now.. She sees the Silver Watch Julian gave her, but in her memory, it’s not on her wrist—it’s in a catalog. Julian’s father had used the Veloso money to buy her silence through "medical care" and "new beginnings." She sees Nicko being dragged away. He wasn't leaving her; he was being forced into a car, his hands reaching for her as the fire climbed the walls. "You..." Elena whispers, looking at Julian. "You didn't just find me after the accident. You were there. You were there when the lighter fell. You knew your father didn't try to save mine." Julian pales, his hand dropping from the clock gear. "Elena, I was trying to give you a life where that didn't matter!" "And you," she turns to Nicko, tears streaming down her face. "You didn't stay to fight. You let them take you." "I spent ten years trying to get back," Nicko says, his voice cracking. "I lived every day in that fire so I could find the way to put it out." She feels the soul-deep, childhood bond with Nicko—the "Truth" she lost. She reaches into the "Silver Watch" on the table and snaps the back casing open with a surgical tool from her bag. Inside, hidden behind the battery Julian thought was the only thing powering it, is a tiny, microfilm strip. "My father didn't just hide the files in the tower," Elena says, her voice echoing with a new authority. "He hid the final key in the one place he knew a Veloso would always keep close to me." She looks at Julian. "He knew you'd try to 'save' me with a gift. He played you, Julian. He used your guilt to make you the courier of the very evidence that will destroy your father. The clock strikes 12:00. The heavy bronze bell tolls, vibrating through their bones. Downstairs, the heavy doors of the tower are kicked open. The Council of Seven has arrived to stop the transmission. Elena holds the microfilm in one hand and the digital drive in the other. She looks at the two men she once loved in two different lives.
