322 Words
Angie's anxiety grew as she dialed her stepfather's number, hoping he'd provide some explanation for her mother's disappearance. When he answered, his tone was calm, but Angie could sense a hint of unease beneath the surface. "Hey, kiddo. What's up?" he asked. "Where's Mom?" Angie demanded, trying to keep her voice steady. "She just left without saying anything. What's going on?" There was a pause on the other end of the line. "Your mother and I...we had some things to work out. She's going through some personal stuff, and she thought it'd be best if she took some time for herself." Angie felt a surge of anger. "Personal stuff? She left me here with you without even a note! How am I supposed to know what's going on?" Her stepfather sighed. "I know this isn't easy, Angie. But we'll get through it together. You can stay here, and I'll take care of you." Amgie wasn't convinced. She wanted answers, and she wanted her mother. "I want to talk to Mom," she insisted. "I'll see what I can do," her stepfather replied. "But for now, just focus on your schoolwork and getting settled, okay?" Angie hung up, feeling frustrated and uncertain about her future. She couldn't concentrate on her schoolwork, and the silence in the house was deafening. As she wandered around the house, she stumbled upon her mother's old phone book. She flipped through the pages, searching for a number or address that might lead her to her mother. She found a number for her mother's best friend, Aunt Rachel. Angie hesitated for a moment before dialing the number. When Aunt Rachel answered, Angie poured out her heart, sharing everything that had happened. Aunt Rachel listened attentively, offering words of comfort. "I'll try to find out what's going on, Angie. But in the meantime, you need to take care of yourself. You're not alone in this." Angie felt a glimmer of hope.
