Chapter Three: A Partnership Nobody Wanted (Part Two) The lunch bell rang, filling the hallways with the familiar sound of lockers slamming and students chatting excitedly. Within seconds, the once-quiet corridors became crowded as everyone made their way to the cafeteria. Iris walked beside Sophie and Ethan, still thinking about the project. "I can't believe I got paired with Declan," she admitted. Sophie gave her a sympathetic smile. "I know." "I've never seen Mrs. Carter pair him with a transfer student before," Ethan added. "Does he usually work alone?" Iris asked. "Not exactly," Ethan replied. "Teachers usually let him choose his own partner. He's the top student in almost every subject." Iris stopped walking. "The top student?" Sophie nodded. "Didn't you know?" "I thought he only cared about making everyone's life miserable." "He can be both," Sophie said with a shrug. "Declan rarely studies in class, but he still gets the highest grades. It's annoying." Ethan laughed. "Very annoying." The three entered the cafeteria, where the smell of freshly baked pastries and grilled sandwiches filled the air. Students gathered around tables, laughing and sharing stories from the weekend. As Iris scanned the room, she noticed the largest table near the windows. Declan sat there with Mason and several other students. No one dared sit at their table unless invited. "It looks like royalty has its own court," Iris whispered. Ethan chuckled. "That's one way to describe it." Just then, a girl wearing an immaculate uniform walked confidently toward Declan's table. She had long chestnut hair, flawless makeup, and carried herself with the confidence of someone who was used to being admired. Several students greeted her as she passed. "Hey, Vanessa." "Morning!" She smiled politely at them before taking the empty seat beside Declan. Sophie leaned closer to Iris. "That's Vanessa Blake." "The girl everyone keeps saying hello to?" Sophie nodded. "She's the student council vice president, captain of the debate team, and one of the most popular girls in school." "She seems nice." Sophie hesitated. "She can be." "But?" "But she doesn't like sharing the spotlight." Before Iris could ask what Sophie meant, Vanessa laughed at something Mason had said and lightly touched Declan's arm. Declan didn't react. He simply continued eating. "Have they always been close?" Iris asked. "No," Ethan answered. "Vanessa wants everyone to think they are." Sophie rolled her eyes. "She's had a crush on Declan for years." "I don't think he feels the same." "No one knows what Declan feels," Sophie replied. "That's the problem." Across the cafeteria, Mason noticed Declan wasn't paying attention to the conversation. Instead, his eyes drifted toward another table. Mason followed his gaze. Iris. He smirked to himself. Interesting. "So, Declan," Mason said loudly enough for only their table to hear, "how's your new project partner?" Declan looked at him. "She's my partner. Nothing more." "I didn't say she was anything more." "You were implying it." "I wasn't." "You were." Vanessa looked between the two boys. "Who's Iris Hayes?" Mason leaned back in his chair. "The transfer student." "The one everyone keeps talking about?" "The very same." Vanessa's eyes searched the cafeteria until they landed on Iris. For a brief moment, the two girls made eye contact. Iris offered a polite smile. Vanessa returned it, though hers didn't quite reach her eyes. Then she looked away. "She seems harmless," Vanessa said. Mason hid another smile. If only she knew. After lunch, the students gathered in the library for the first stage of their project. The room buzzed with quiet conversations as Mrs. Carter handed each pair a list of research topics. "You'll have today to gather basic information," she explained. "Tomorrow, we'll discuss your findings." Iris and Declan settled at a table near one of the tall windows overlooking the gardens. A stack of books sat between them. Iris picked up the first one. "So..." Declan looked up. "So?" "Since we're partners, maybe we should decide who researches what." "You organize." "And you?" "I'll read." She blinked. "That's your entire plan?" "It usually works." Iris couldn't help laughing. "You know, you're very confident." "I have reasons." She opened her notebook. "Fine. I'll organize the notes, and you find the information." For the next forty minutes, they worked in comfortable silence. Every now and then, Iris asked a question. "What year was the school founded?" "1958." "Who was the first principal?" "Arthur Whitmore." "You've already memorized all that?" "I read quickly." She shook her head in amazement. "I think you're secretly a genius." Declan raised an eyebrow. "Don't tell anyone." She smiled. "I'll keep your secret." For just a second, the atmosphere between them felt... normal. No arguments. No tension. Just two classmates working together. Across the library, Vanessa glanced up from her own project. She noticed Iris laughing. She noticed Declan answering her questions. Most surprising of all... She noticed he wasn't telling Iris to leave him alone. Vanessa frowned. "I've never seen him this patient." Her friend Emily looked over. "Maybe the rumors are true." "What rumors?" "That Declan actually respects her." Vanessa immediately dismissed the idea. "Declan doesn't respect anyone." Still... A tiny seed of jealousy had begun to grow. The afternoon passed more quickly than anyone expected. As students packed their bags, Mrs. Carter walked over to Iris and Declan. "I've looked over your notes." Iris smiled nervously. "Are they okay?" "They're very good." She looked at Declan. "I'm impressed." He simply nodded. "Tomorrow, I'd like the two of you to continue your research in the historical records section. Very few students are allowed access, so make good use of the opportunity." Historical records. The words immediately caught Iris's attention. She loved history. Maybe she'd finally learn something interesting about Sapphire High. As they left the library, Mason caught up with Declan. "I have to admit," he said, "I expected one of you to storm out." "So did I," Iris joked. Mason laughed. "Looks like you survived." "Barely," Declan replied. Iris looked at him in surprise. Was that... another joke? Mason noticed her expression and grinned. "Believe it or not, he's actually capable of humor." Declan sighed. "You're talking too much." "I usually do." The three shared a brief laugh before heading in different directions. As Iris walked toward the school gates with Sophie, she couldn't stop thinking about her project partner. Maybe everyone at Sapphire High only saw the cold, untouchable side of Declan Anderson. But today... She had caught tiny glimpses of someone else. Someone who wasn't nearly as frightening as he wanted the world to believe. She had no idea that those small moments of understanding were only the beginning. Because tomorrow, inside the school's historical records room, one unexpected discovery would change everything they thought they knew about Sapphire High.
