Chapter Three: A Partnership Nobody Wanted (Part One) Monday morning arrived with a crisp breeze that swept across the sprawling campus of Sapphire High. The towering clock above the main building struck eight, its chime echoing through the courtyard as luxury cars lined up at the entrance. Students climbed out, laughing with friends, comparing expensive watches, handbags, and shoes, while others hurried toward class with books tucked beneath their arms. Standing just outside the school gates, Iris Hayes took a slow breath. It had only been three days since she transferred to Sapphire High, yet it already felt like she'd been there for weeks. The whispers, the curious stares, and the constant gossip had become almost impossible to ignore. "That's the girl who stood up to Declan Anderson." "She's either fearless or completely crazy." "I heard Declan hasn't stopped watching her." Iris shook her head as she walked through the gates. "If they spent half as much time studying as they do gossiping," she murmured to herself, "this school would have the smartest students in the country." A familiar laugh came from behind her. "I couldn't agree more." Iris turned to see Sophie Brooks jogging toward her, her blonde ponytail swaying with every step. "Morning," Sophie said cheerfully. "Morning." Sophie studied Iris's face for a moment. "You look better today." "I slept better." "That's good." They began walking toward the main building together. "So," Sophie asked, "how are you settling in?" Iris looked around the enormous campus. "I'm still getting used to everything." "Especially Declan?" Iris laughed softly. "Especially Declan." Sophie sighed dramatically. "You know, most students spend months trying not to get his attention." "I wasn't trying to." "I know." "But somehow I did anyway." "You definitely did." Before either of them could continue, another voice interrupted. "Well, if it isn't Sapphire High's newest celebrity." The girls turned to see Ethan Carter walking toward them with an easy smile. He was tall, athletic, and carried himself with the relaxed confidence of someone who got along with almost everyone. "Morning," he said. "Morning," Iris and Sophie replied together. Ethan looked at Iris. "I don't think we've officially met." "I'm Iris." "Ethan Carter." He offered his hand. "It's nice to meet you." She shook it with a smile. "You too." "I've heard a lot about you." "I'm beginning to wish people would stop saying that." Ethan laughed. "Unfortunately, that's impossible around here." "What do you mean?" "Sapphire High runs on three things." "Which are?" "Gossip, grades..." He paused dramatically. "...and Declan Anderson." The three of them laughed. For the first time since arriving at Sapphire High, Iris felt surprisingly comfortable. Maybe this school wasn't entirely made up of intimidating people. Maybe there was room for friendships too. Across the parking lot, a sleek black Aston Martin rolled through the school gates. The conversations around campus immediately quieted. Students instinctively stepped aside. Declan Anderson stepped out of the driver's seat wearing his navy blazer with effortless confidence. His expression remained unreadable as always. Walking beside him was his closest friend, Mason Reed. Unlike Declan, Mason was cheerful and constantly smiling. "So," Mason began with a grin, "the famous transfer student." Declan didn't look at him. "What about her?" "You've become the hottest topic in school." Declan adjusted the cuff of his blazer. "People need better hobbies." Mason chuckled. "You've been unusually quiet these past few days." "So?" "You only get quiet when something's bothering you." "Nothing's bothering me." "Oh?" Mason nodded toward the courtyard where Iris, Sophie, and Ethan were talking. "Then why have you looked over there three times already?" Declan followed his gaze for the briefest moment. He immediately looked away. "I wasn't." "You were." "I wasn't." Mason laughed. "You know, for someone who claims not to care, you're paying an awful lot of attention." Declan ignored him and continued walking toward the school building. Still... Without meaning to... His eyes searched for Iris one more time. Inside the classroom, students settled into their seats as Mrs. Carter walked in carrying several folders. "Good morning, class." "Good morning, Mrs. Carter." She smiled warmly. "I hope everyone had a restful weekend because today we're beginning our Founder's Week research project." Groans echoed around the room. Mrs. Carter laughed. "I expected that reaction." She placed the folders on her desk. "As many of you already know, Founder's Week is Sapphire High's oldest tradition. Every second-year student researches an aspect of the school's history before presenting it to the entire grade." Ethan leaned toward Iris. "Translation?" She smiled. "A lot of work." "Exactly." Mrs. Carter picked up a clipboard. "I've already assigned partners." Immediately, the room grew quiet. One by one, she called out names. "Sophie Brooks and Ethan Carter." "Guess we're partners," Ethan whispered. Sophie smiled. "Looks like it." Mrs. Carter continued reading. "Iris Hayes..." Iris looked up. "...and Declan Anderson." Silence. Complete silence. Every head in the classroom slowly turned toward them. Mason let out a low whistle. "Well..." Even Declan looked mildly surprised. Mrs. Carter adjusted her glasses. "Is there a problem?" "No, ma'am," Declan answered calmly. Iris picked up her notebook and walked to the empty seat beside him. She placed her books on the desk before glancing sideways. "I guess we're partners." Declan closed the book he'd been reading. "I guess we are." Neither of them spoke for several moments. Finally, Iris sighed. "This is going to be a long three weeks." For the first time... The corner of Declan's mouth lifted into the faintest hint of a smile. "So I've heard." Iris blinked. Did... Did Declan Anderson just make a joke? Before she could decide, his expression returned to its usual cold calm. Maybe she'd imagined it. Mrs. Carter clapped her hands for attention. "Each pair will begin their research in the library after lunch. I expect teamwork, respect, and originality from everyone." As the lesson continued, Iris couldn't help but wonder whether working with Declan would be a complete disaster... ...or the beginning of something neither of them expected.
