Episode: The Woman Who Knows His Name

889 Words
The woman stepped fully into the room like she belonged there more than the air itself. Zainab noticed everything at once. The way her heels made no hesitation on the marble floor. The way the security guard outside didn't stop her. The way even the silence seemed to adjust around her presence. And most of all the way Darius Kingsley didn't look surprised to see her. That was the part that stayed with Zainab. Not surprise. Recognition. The woman smiled again, softer this time, but it didn't reach her eyes. I didn't know you were interviewing new assistants personally, she said, glancing briefly at Zainab. Darius's voice was calm. You didn't schedule an appointment, Sophie. So that was her name. Sophie Lane. Zainab quietly placed her pen down, suddenly aware of her own presence in the room like she had become something fragile in a space built for stronger things. Sophie walked further in, ignoring Zainab completely now. I didn't need an appointment, Sophie replied lightly. We both know I don't get treated like one. Darius's jaw tightened just slightly. Zainab caught it. So did Sophie. A silence followed one that wasn't empty, but full of history Zainab wasn't invited into. Darius finally spoke. What do you want? Sophie tilted her head. You. The word landed cleanly. No hesitation. Zainab's breath slowed without her permission. Sophie finally turned her gaze toward her. Oh, she said, as if noticing her for the first time. I didn't realize you were in a meeting. Zainab straightened slightly. I can step out. No, Darius said immediately. One word. Sharp. Final. Zainab paused. That surprised her more than Sophie's arrival. Darius didn't look at her when he said it. He kept his eyes on Sophie. But the instruction was for Zainab. Stay. Sophie walked closer to the desk where Zainab sat. You must be the new assistant, she said. Yes, Zainab replied carefully. Sophie smiled faintly. How long have you lasted? An hour? Two? Zainab didn't respond. Darius's voice cut in. Sophie. It wasn't loud. But it stopped her immediately. Sophie exhaled and turned back to him. You always hire them young, she said. Hopeful. Impressionable. Zainab felt the temperature in the room shift. Darius stepped away from the window now, finally fully engaged. "That's enough, he said. Sophie crossed her arms. I'm just observing. You're interfering. I'm concerned, she corrected. That word hung there. Concern. Zainab looked between them carefully now, starting to understand something she hadn't been told. This wasn't just a visit. This was history. Sophie took a step closer to Darius, lowering her voice slightly. You promised I wouldn't be replaced by staff you barely know. Zainab's fingers tightened slightly on the edge of the file. So that was it. Not just an ex. An unfinished ending. Darius's expression hardened. I promised a lot of things, he said quietly. That doesn't mean they remain valid. Sophie's smile faltered for half a second. Then returned but thinner. You've changed. No, he replied. I've stopped repeating mistakes. That hit harder than anything else in the room. Even Sophie went quiet for a moment. Zainab looked down at her documents, trying to make herself invisible again, but the tension had already wrapped around her. Sophie finally turned away from Darius and looked at Zainab properly this time. Be careful, she said softly. Zainab looked up. Of what? Sophie smiled but it wasn't friendly. Of thinking you're the first woman to sit where you're sitting. Darius's voice came instantly. Leave. Sophie paused. Then she looked at him one last time. You always think you can control everything, she said. I don't think it, he replied. I do. A beat. Sophie walked toward the elevator. Before stepping in, she glanced back at Zainab one last time. This one looks smarter than the others, she said. Try not to break her too quickly. Then she was gone. The doors closed. Silence returned but it was different now. Heavier. Zainab didn't look up immediately. She could feel him still standing there. Watching her. Finally, she spoke carefully. Should I continue the work, or Continue, Darius said. She nodded and went back to the documents. But her mind wasn't on them anymore. It was on Sophie's words. You're not the first. That thought lingered like a shadow she couldn't brush away. After a few minutes, Darius spoke again. You don't need to pay attention to her. Zainab hesitated. She seems... important. A pause. She is, he admitted. That honesty surprised her. Zainab looked up slightly. Was she your assistant too? A faint silence. Then No, he said. Another pause. She was my fiancée. The word landed softly. But it changed everything. Zainab didn't know what reaction was expected of her, so she chose none. She simply nodded slowly and returned to her work. But inside, something shifted. Because now she understood. This wasn't just a billionaire's office. It was a place filled with unfinished stories. And she had just walked into the middle of one. Darius walked back toward the glass wall, his expression unreadable again. But for the first time, Zainab noticed something different about him. Not coldness. Distance. As if part of him was still somewhere Sophie had just come from. And no matter how expensive the building was... Some things money could never fully erase.
