NOT JUST ENOUGH

Mandy sat alone in her office, the weight of uncertainty pressing heavily on her shoulders. Despite her best efforts to push aside the nagging doubts that plagued her mind, she couldn't shake the feeling that something was amiss. She knew something was still going on in Jake's life, but she couldn't quite put her finger on it. With a heavy sigh, Mandy reached for her coffee, the warmth of the cup comforting against her trembling fingers. As she took a sip, her mind wandered to Jake, her husband, and the tumultuous state of their marriage. Jake continues to turn on and off concerning their relationship as it looks like his mind was not in on their marriage. What Mandy couldn't understand was what had changed because Jake was her childhood friend and lover. For months now, Mandy had sensed a distance growing between them, a chasm widening with each passing day. She had tried to ignore the whispers of suspicion that haunted her thoughts, the nagging feeling that Jake was keeping something from her. She couldn't just let go. But as much as she tried to bury her fears beneath a facade of strength and composure, Mandy couldn't deny the truth that lay beneath the surface. Deep down, she knew that something was off, it was like Jake was slipping away from her, drifting further and further into the arms of another. And though she had tried to convince herself otherwise, Mandy couldn't ignore the signs any longer. The late-night phone calls, the secret glances exchanged behind closed doors, and it was clear that Jake was involved with someone else, someone she knew all too well. She was sure it was someone in the office, but everyone kept mute. Mandy could not understand men like Jake, she is a complete and beautiful woman, yet from the onset of their marriage, Jake had not been faithful. She could not understand what Jake was looking for, but she decided she was going to give it another try. Kate, Jake's personal assistant, had always been a constant presence in their lives. She has been a confidante, a friend, and a trusted ally. But lately, Mandy had sensed a shift in their relationship, a subtle undercurrent of tension that lingered between them. And as much as Mandy wanted to believe that it was all in her imagination, she couldn't shake the feeling that Kate was more than just a colleague to Jake and that there was something deeper, something more intimate, between them. But despite the pain and uncertainty that persistently stared at her heart, Mandy couldn't bring herself to confront the truth head-on. Part of her clung to the hope that Jake would come to his senses, that he would realize the depth of their bond and come back to her. And so, with a heavy heart and a flicker of hope in her soul, Mandy pushed aside her fears and buried herself in her work, praying that somehow, someway, things would work out in the end. But deep down, she knew that the road ahead would be full of challenges and uncertainty and that the path to redemption would be anything but easy. As Mandy's meeting with their project partners loomed closer, she grew increasingly anxious about the lack of communication from Jake. With time ticking away and the pressure mounting, she knew she couldn't afford to appear unprepared. She called her secretary, Emmy, and Mandy instructed her to call Jake's office and request the necessary files for the meeting. As the minutes passed with no response, Mandy's apprehension only deepened. She wondered why Jake could not have prepared for a meeting they had worked so hard to get. “Emmy, can you please do something? I needed those files on my table like a minute ago. Jake knew this was a big day, something must be holding him up. Please find out and get to me,” Mandy pleaded. “Okay, ma'am, I will try calling them some more. I am sure they are working on the files. That's why we cannot reach them,” Emmy replied. Emmy's attempts to reach Jake and Kate went unanswered, prompting her to take matters into her own hands. Determined to ensure that Mandy had the information she needed, Emmy decided to walk over to Jake's office herself. Arriving at Jake's office, Emmy hesitated for a moment before knocking on the door. But as the door swung open, she was met with a sight that left her stunned and speechless. There, in the midst of their passionate embrace, stood Jake and Kate, without their clothes and their messy appearance betraying the intimacy of the encounter. Shocked and incredulous, Emmy felt a surge of anger and betrayal wash over her. Summoning every ounce of composure she possessed, Emmy relayed Mandy's message to the guilty couple, her voice trembling with righteous indignation. But as Jake and Kate hurriedly dressed and made their excuses, Emmy's anger only intensified, her disappointment in Jake was so real. With a curt nod of dismissal, Emmy watched as Jake and Kate put on their clothes while she hurriedly left the office, their guilt hanging heavy in the air. As she departed the scene, Emmy vowed to stand by Mandy's side and support her through the storm that was sure to come, for she thought that Mandy did not deserve this. She also wonders why Jake would cheat on a beautiful woman such as Mandy. “Do you think that she will tell Mandy?” asked Kate. “I don't know, but we are about to find out because Mandy would, as usual, not take it lightly,” Jake said. “We need to get rid of Emmy and do it quickly too,” Kate suggested, now fully dressed and gathering the scattered files, “Get rid of her! How, please? Do you mean we killed her or what?” Jake asked. “Of course, I am not saying that. I mean we should terminate her job,” explained Kate. “So Mandy became more suspicious? I told you that I would meet with you tonight. This is all your fault. You don't listen,” Jake said. He was now feeling sorry for himself because he had just reconciled with his wife last night, and today he got into a great mess. Meanwhile, Emmy went to her office still shocked at what she had seen. She has been hearing gossip about Jake and Kate, but now she has confirmed those rumors to be true. She thought to herself that the office complex cameras were everywhere, and all the staff knew this, except that the chief security knew about this too because there was no way they would not have been caught on camera before. “Emmy, you better speak, you have been standing there for more than a minute staring at me. Can you please say something?” Mandy asked, not sure why Emmy was looking at her dazed and confused.
