I don't try and hide my snooping. In fact, I leave the bowl on the coffee table, in my eye line as I fall asleep. If I hadn't been afraid of breaking it, I would have cradled it in my arms. Before sleep, I spin the bowl once and can almost see the oil and blood swirling in the bottom as it had in the cave, hundreds of years ago. For the first time, I realize how lost I am. I might be gaining power but besides the limited, abstract visions from Sauska, I have no instruction. I could hurt someone I love, meddling with powers I don't understand. Tossing and turning under an oversized wabi-sabi quilt, my mind spins with worry. I can't stop imagining Amun, writhing with sunlight coming out of his eyes. Or what if my power attracts something dark? Something beyond the army of powerful vampire
