Manhattan sparkles on the horizon as we speed into the night, through the cold autumn air. I lean against the railing on the top deck of the yacht, watching the buildings get smaller and smaller in the starless night. My whole body shivers. The cold ocean air easily makes its way to my skin through my leather jacket and sweatshirt. It's not just the cold that makes me shiver. I know there's something waiting for me on the other side of this ocean, something I'm not sure I'm ready for yet. Now that my mother might be out there, I long for her more than ever. I long for warmth and guidance. Instead, I'm traveling away from the only country I've ever known.
