Two Sons, One Future

812 Words
The sound of little footsteps echoed through the hallway as Liam peeked cautiously around the corner of the guest room. Across the room, a boy with slightly curlier hair and the same sharp gray eyes was sitting cross-legged on the floor, flipping through a dinosaur book. The room fell silent as the two boys locked eyes. Elira held her breath. It was the moment she’d dreaded and longed for at the same time — Liam meeting Caleb. Her sons, finally face to face. “Hi,” Liam said timidly. Caleb blinked. “Hi.” “I like dinosaurs,” Liam offered. Caleb grinned. “Me too.” Just like that, the tension dissolved. The two boys sat beside each other, heads bowed over the book, trading facts and giggles. Elira's heart ached with overwhelming joy and guilt. She hadn’t imagined it would go this smoothly. But seeing them together, she couldn’t stop her tears from forming. Damien stood silently by the door, arms crossed. He had stayed up most of the night after the DNA results came. Twins. His children. Two sons he never knew he had. He glanced at Elira. “They’re… good together.” She nodded. “They always should have been.” He didn’t answer. His jaw was tight. Later that afternoon, Damien asked Elira to walk with him in the garden. The tension between them was thick. "Why didn’t you tell me you were pregnant?" he asked, not angrily, but with deep weariness. “I tried to,” she said softly. “But you were gone." And when I found out about your engagement to Cassandra…” His brows furrowed. “That was arranged. I broke it off before I left. I told my father no.” She looked up at him, stunned. “You… did?” He nodded. “I was coming back for you.” The truth hung between them like smoke. “I didn’t know that,” Elira whispered. All I saw was the engagement party in the papers. By then, I’d already decided to keep the baby a secret.” Damien's face twisted. “Why twins, Elira? "Why didn’t you keep them both?” She gripped the garden railing, trembling. “I was nineteen. Alone. My family abandoned me, and I had no money, no support. I was afraid I couldn’t raise two babies. A social worker helped me find a loving home for Caleb. I wanted to give him a chance I couldn’t provide.” His voice cracked. “You should’ve come to me.” “I didn’t think you wanted anything to do with me.” Damien turned away, hands clenched at his sides. The pain in his eyes was unmistakable. “I lost five years with them,” he said. “I can’t get that back.” Elira wiped her tears. “Neither can I.” The next few days were filled with awkward adjustments. Damien had arranged for Caleb’s adoptive parents — the Martells — to visit and discuss co-parenting options. Mrs. Martell was kind but protective. “He’s our son, Mr. Callahan. We’ve raised him since birth.” “And I respect that,” Damien said calmly. But I’m his biological father. I want to be involved in his life.” They reached an agreement for joint custody, at least temporarily. But Damien had other thoughts forming. That night, Damien found Elira on the balcony, staring out into the night sky. “They love each other,” she said, smiling faintly. “Like they’ve known each other forever.” Damien stepped closer. “They’re brothers. Blood runs deep.” She looked up at him, vulnerable. “Are you going to take them away from me?” He flinched. “Is that what you think?” “I don’t know what to think anymore.” He took a deep breath. “Then let me be clear.” He turned to her fully, eyes intense. “Marry me, Elira. We raise them together.” Her heart stopped. “W-What?” “I’m not doing this halfway. I lost too much time. I won’t lose more.” She backed away slightly. “Damien, we can’t just jump into marriage.” “Why not?” he challenged. “You love them." You loved me once.” Tears pooled in her eyes. “It’s not that simple.” He stepped forward. “Yes, it is. You, me, Liam, and Caleb. A family. That’s all I want.” She looked at him, trembling between fear and longing. Then he added quietly, “If you say no… I’ll take this to court.” She gasped. “I don’t want a fight," Elira said. But I won’t walk away again. Think about it. I’ll wait for your answer.” And with that, he walked away, leaving Elira alone with the stars and her heart torn in two.
