The Shadow Queen

Chapter 18 The Heart Chamber darkened completely. Black roots spread across the glowing floor beneath Morgana Dark’s feet while corrupted energy climbed the walls like living smoke. The crystal heart pulsed violently above them. Weakening. Dying. And standing beneath it all— Morgana smiled calmly. Like she had already won. “You manipulated the prophecy…” Aretha whispered. Morgana’s violet eyes gleamed. “Of course.” The confession hit the chamber heavily. “For centuries,” Morgana continued, “both kingdoms feared the child of balance because fear is easier to control than hope.” Elyria’s glowing form flickered with anger. “You poisoned history itself.” “I improved it,” Morgana answered coldly. Dark magic twisted through the air around her. “The world was never meant for balance.” Her gaze sharpened toward Aretha. “Balance creates weakness.” Fenrir stepped forward protectively. “And endless hatred creates monsters.” Morgana laughed softly. “Coming from a chained guardian, that means very little.” The corruption surrounding her intensified. Shadow creatures began emerging from the walls again. This time larger. More monstrous. Liam immediately extended his claws. “We really need to stop having conversations with insane people.” Nyra’s metallic wings snapped open. “Agreed.” But before anyone could attack— Morgana raised one hand. And the roots exploded. BOOOOM! Dark vines burst upward across the chamber, separating everyone instantly. Aretha was thrown backward across the floor while black roots formed barriers between the group. “ARETHA!” Liam shouted. He slashed through several roots immediately, but they regenerated faster than he could destroy them. Allan summoned shadow fire against another wall of roots. “Mother, stop this!” Morgana turned toward him slowly. Disappointment crossed her face. “You disappoint me more every time you speak.” Dark energy slammed into Allan instantly. He crashed violently into one of the chamber walls. “ALLAN!” Aretha shouted instinctively. Morgana noticed. And smiled. Interesting. The Shadow Queen stepped toward Aretha through the spreading darkness. “You feel connected to him already.” Aretha forced herself backward. “You’re insane.” “No,” Morgana answered softly. “I simply understand destiny better than the rest of you.” The crystal heart cracked louder above them. Black energy spilled from inside it now. The corruption had nearly reached the core. Fenrir roared while tearing through roots across the chamber. “If the heart fully corrupts, the tree will collapse!” Morgana didn’t even look concerned. “That is the point.” Silence hit like thunder. Even the shadows seemed to pause. Morgana’s violet eyes glowed brighter. “The old kingdoms deserve to die.” Then she looked directly at Aretha. “And from their ashes… you will build something greater beside me.” Aretha stared at her in horror. “You think I would help you?” “You already are.” The roots beneath Aretha suddenly glowed black. Pain exploded through her shoulder mark again. She screamed as shadow energy spread across her skin. The curse. Morgana smiled triumphantly. “The Blood Hex was never meant to kill your mother.” Fear gripped Aretha instantly. “What did you do to me?” Morgana knelt slowly before her. “I planted shadow within you before you were even born.” The chamber went still. “Your power was always connected to me.” “No…” Aretha whispered. Morgana touched Aretha’s glowing mark gently. And suddenly— Visions flooded her mind violently. A pregnant Selene screaming beneath dark ritual symbols. Kael fighting shadow witches desperately. Morgana placing her hand against Selene’s stomach while whispering ancient curses. Then— A newborn Aretha opening silver eyes glowing with both light and darkness. The visions shattered. Aretha gasped painfully. Tears filled her eyes immediately. “You ruined my life…” For the first time— Morgana’s expression softened strangely. “No.” Her voice lowered almost gently. “I saved it.” The words felt worse than hatred. Liam finally broke through the roots separating them. Golden energy exploded across the chamber as he reached Aretha instantly. He pulled her away from Morgana protectively. “Touch her again and I’ll rip this chamber apart.” Morgana looked amused. “The wolf heir.” Her violet eyes narrowed slightly. “You care for her deeply already.” Liam’s expression hardened. “That’s none of your business.” Morgana smiled knowingly. “Love makes people predictable.” Darkness suddenly erupted from beneath her feet. Hundreds of corrupted roots attacked at once. The chamber exploded into battle again. Nyra and Caspian fought beside Fenrir against shadow creatures flooding through the walls while Elias struggled to keep the corruption away from the crystal heart using vision magic. Allan rose slowly from the shattered wall. Blood stained the corner of his mouth now. But his silver eyes burned with fury. “You used me.” Morgana turned toward him calmly. “I raised you.” “You murdered Kael.” For the first time— Silence. Then Morgana answered quietly: “He chose weakness.” Allan’s hands trembled. Shadow magic swirled violently around him. “He was my brother.” “And he betrayed us.” The future king’s expression finally broke. Years of grief. Anger. Loss. Everything exploded at once. Dark energy burst across the chamber violently enough to shake the roots themselves. Morgana’s smile disappeared. Because suddenly— Allan’s shadow magic no longer looked corrupted. Silver light mixed within the darkness itself. Balance. Elyria stared in shock. “He’s awakening…” Morgana’s eyes widened slightly for the first time. “No.” Allan slowly lifted his head. And for the first time since meeting him— Aretha saw pain behind his coldness. “You took everything from our family.” The chamber trembled harder. The crystal heart pulsed between gold and black wildly above them. Then Aretha’s mark suddenly glowed too. Light and shadow erupted around her simultaneously. The roots surrounding the chamber reacted instantly. Because for the first time in centuries— Both bloodlines had awakened together. And the Tree of Life recognized them.
