Clayton Harris, the sheriff of the small town in Massachusetts that was troubling Sherwin Williams's thoughts, was at that exact moment standing on the edge of a deep road ditch, supervising a grim work crew and thinking how miserable the last eighteen months of his existence had been.
His tribulations had begun two summers back, when young Danny Tremain, a ten-year-old kid, had stumbled upon the dead body of Lawrence Callahan in a ditch pretty much like this one, that only differed in size; this was one of the side ditches of Stanner Road and it was a trench when you compared it with that gully of two summers back. Hell—it was the Grand Canyon by comparison with that ditch near Lozano's Junkyard, the place where Danny Tremain had found that corpse.
