“Are you sure about this Britanny?”
“Won’t your father get mad at me?” I continuously asked the woman who was busy on her phone.
Her face was crumpled yet she managed to answer. “Yes, Sierra, don’t worry.”
“They showed up just like that. For what? To cause chaos?” Britanny mumbles.
My forehead creased. “Are you talking to me Britanny?” I asked, a bit confused.
“No, Sierra. We should get going.” She replied and smiled.
I checked her out from head to foot and was wearing a simple dress. “Don’t look at me like that.”
“W-Why aren’t you wearing the same elegant dress as I do?” I asked.
“Why?” She chuckled.
“Have you forgotten that you will be my substitute for this party?” She added.
“Y-Yeah… Sorry, but am I going inside alone?” I asked. I’m sure I’ll be surrounded by powerful people, and it would be intimidating for me to get there. Plus, the fact that I’m not just human doesn’t scare me though, as I can’t shift anyway, but still, it’s only a week since I entered their world, and it wasn’t really easy to adjust.
“Oh no, sweety. A friend of mine will escort you. He has actually texted me already. He was on his way. Let’s go?” I wasn’t even able to ask who her friend was when she dragged me out of their mansion.
“You’ll enjoy this party, Sierra. Who would know that you might find your true love here?”
Shaking my head, “That’s not my priority Britanny. I just need to get all of this done tonight so I can go back to my job tomorrow.” I answered.
“Oh, you shouldn’t worry much about that, Sierra. I’ve already talked to your manager, and he said you should enjoy it.” She winked at me again, and this time didn’t remove my gaze at her. She’s beautiful and stunning without much on her face. I wonder why she wouldn’t want to attend the party. Was it really because the fact that she doesn’t want to be tied to someone else, and her dad keeps on telling her to date someone makes her sick? I didn’t know that arranged marriage was also a trend here. The same goes in the pack where the Alpha should be mated to the Luna, with a bloodline of novelty.
‘Was I really Alpha Primo’s mate?’
‘or…he was just pretending all along?’
‘it was possible since I don’t have a wolf, and I can’t feel the mate bond.’
Alpha Primo said that there was a red string that tied us together, so I assumed that I could feel it too. But it’s probably a pure hoax. I didn’t know that they were just playing with my feelings all along.
“Earth to Britanny?” Taken back when Britanny waved her hand in front of me.
“Are you overthinking what would happen at the party?” She asked.
“I apologize if I worry you have much, and this has brought you inconvenience. But just this one please…”
“I…I don’t really want to attend that party.” She replied.
Guilt suddenly eats my system, “ N-No Britanny. It’s not what I am thinking.” I assured her and smiled. Finally, her worried face faltered.
“We’re here, Sierra. Don’t forget all my reminders and enjoy yourself!” She waved her hand and pushed me out of the car gently. I quickly fixed the mask on my face.
“I’ll wait for you here!” She exclaimed before she slammed the door closed. Her driver assisted me until someone with a familiar built walk toward me.
He extended his hand, and bowed in a gentlemanly way, “You look dazzling, Sierra.”
“Harrold?”
He chuckled, “Britanny gave you a headache, did she?” He asked.
“H-How?”
I was still confused. What is he doing here?
“We should get inside first. Britanny’s dad was waiting for you already.” He answered, and I had left no choice but to take his hand.
“I apologize if I chose you to run that errand for me. I saw this coming. Britanny is my childhood friend. Knowing her, she won’t attend this party. And since you came into the picture, I recently figured out that she hired you to pretend to be her for a night.” He explained briefly. As our feet walked onto the red carpet, flashes of cameras erupted.
“Just smile, and pretend that you weren’t distracted and confused all along,” He added.
“Britanny acts that way, and it would be strange if you'd wave your hand at them, or bow your head. You’re a daughter of a CEO tonight, Sierra.”
Thinking that this night wouldn’t be as easy as it is. But whenever I remember the thousands of bucks, I have to do this to survive.
Harrold escorted me to the group of men wearing elegant suits. A familiar man glanced at me. It was probably Britanny's father.
“Britanny, my daughter.” He walked towards me and greeted me as he pretended to kiss my cheek, but it didn’t even touch my skin. I’ve learned that this is how people greet each other here.
“Good evening, I was pleased to be invited here.” I greeted them all and smiled. Those were the words that Britanny told me.
“It’s good to finally meet Williams’ heiress, it’s the first time you have attended your father’s colleagues' party.” A woman who’s probably in her mid-forties commented.
With the way she smiled at me, I could tell how fake it was.
“Well, aside from being the daughter of a wealthy man…” I glanced shortly at Britanny’s father.
“I also attend law school. Attending a party was at the least of my priority.” I continued, the exact words that Britanny wanted me to deliver. Harrold was right, Britanny was too straightforward and didn’t fake her actions.
The woman was bound to be speechless, so Harrold handed me a glass of wine, and I elegantly took it.
“A future law practitioner.” A man intervened, his hair was neatly brushed, and his mustached gives him that intimidating aura. The way he sits screams dominance.
“Interesting, was it, Mr. Williams?” He asked, why am I not comfortable in his presence? Compare the other people on this circular table.
“But… you are bound to continue your father’s legacy, right?” He asked.
That… I wasn’t prepared for that. I slowly held Harold’s hand to ask for help.
“You are Britanny, tonight Sierra.” He suddenly whispered. And I get it, that only means one thing. No matter what I say, I will reflect on Britanny, and I have to be careful of my words.
“I’ll look forward to that. Dad doesn’t seem to get any older, right?” They all chuckled and agreed.
“So I think before I could take over the company, it would take me a decade,” I added and would fake a laugh.
“Nice point, but who is this man with you, Britanny?”
“Oh, Harrold is my escort today,” I answered, without thinking.
The man earlier, with an intimidating aura, took a short glance at Harrold before shifting it to Britanny’s father.
“My son, Akihiro seemed perfect in his place.” He blurts out, so this is the dating part that Britanny was sick of.
I took a short sip at the wine before I slowly roamed my eyes into the whole area. Clearing my throat, “but your son enjoys some other girl’s company as well.” I shot back as I didn’t leave the man who was laughing with a woman with white skin, her golden gown complimented it more.
They all glanced at where I was looking, and my lips smirked a bit. “Let’s stop this nonsense, I’m sure your son won’t pick someone who was a daughter of a farmer. Or whether it was, it would be his choice. None of us here would decide for him.” I could feel Harrold’s hand on mine, stopping me, but I didn’t.
“I have dreams as well, and I would like to choose the man I want to marry, later after I become a lawyer. So please, excuse me.”
I stood up and pretended to kiss my father’s cheeks. I bowed lightly enough to them all, to pay respect before I left them. I even saw how the smile on the man's earlier lips faltered.
The interior of the party was perfect enough to please all the attendees. Suddenly, as the music stops…
“H-Help me!” It was a soft scream of a woman like someone was running out of breath.
Roaming my eyes, it settled on the second floor of the venue. It was surrounded by a golden veranda, and in the center were the stairs glimmering as well. I didn’t think twice and ran towards it without minding people’s attention towards me. It took me a minute to fully get to the top. And was surprised by a similar door design, that seemed to be guest rooms. Probably for those who are privileged, or powerful visitors on the ground.
“H-Help!”
I quickly ran towards the door and tried to eavesdrop on where those screams were coming from. My heart started pounding so fast, what’s going on right now? I checked the other rooms as well, and I couldn’t hear anything inside. Were these rooms soundproof? No, if it was, then I wouldn’t hear the voice of that woman asking for help.
Until my eyes darted at the only room left, I was startled at the sound of the broken glass that fell on the floor, followed by a terrifying scream that sent me shivering.
“P-Please help me!”
The people downstairs don’t seem to have any idea of what’s going on here. I held the knob of the door and tilted it, but as expected, it was locked.
I tried to knock. There’s no way I can open this door. It looks like it was made of high-quality and expensive materials, finding the key will take me time.
“Is someone inside?!” I exclaimed.
Silence filled the entire floor, even the people in the room seemed to be shut as well.
“H-Hello?” I tried to knock more this time. I was a bit frustrated as I was not getting any response inside. I was worried for an unknown reason about that women. With how she screams, it looks like she’s begging for her life.
A few more minutes passed, and I tried to kick the door this time. My arms were aching at the impact of the hard metallic door, until my last attempt.
“Ah!” the door suddenly opened, and I fell onto the floor.
I wasn’t recovering yet from the pain as my face was still crumpled by it when my eyes landed on two people inside.
Terror fills me.
As his red eyes met mine, a smirk escaped his lips. My eyes darted at the woman next to him, drenched with her own blood, and …
Wasn’t breathing.
‘Is this the reason why Britanny doesn’t want to attend this meeting?’
