We’ve been drinking and dancing for hours. I knew I was drunk, but not drunk enough that I didn’t know fully what I was doing. I snuck away from the party. I wanted to know what Gabe did to Nate. I’ve been trying not to think about it, but I was sad my best friend wasn’t here celebrating with me.
I dialed Gabe’s number. He didn’t answer. I called again. And again.
“What?” he snapped.
“Gabe, there you are!”
“What do you want, Nora? I’m in the middle of something.”
“Gabe… what did you do with Nathaniel? Where is he?”
He hung up. So rude, I mumbled to myself before calling back. “Nora… not now. I’ll talk to you tomorrow.”
Before he could hang up, I quickly blurted. “Tell me or I’m dancing with someone.”
There was silence on the other end. I knew I was playing a risky game with him. He didn’t want me how I wanted him, but he didn’t want anyone else to touch me either. I smiled at my small victory.
“You wouldn’t dare.” He growled out.
I giggled. “Of course, I would, silly. It’s my birthday! I can dance with whoever I want!”
“Where are you? You’re too drunk.”
“You’re not my dad, Gabe. Just tell me where Nate is so I can go get him.”
“You’re not going anywhere like that, Nora.” I could hear the noises behind Gabe go silent. He must have left whatever room he was in.
“Where is he, Gabriel?”
“Nate is out of the country.” He spat. I hung up. I knew I shouldn’t have, but I also knew Gabe did this on purpose. He’s always been demanding of who I can and cannot hangout with, especially when it comes to guys. My phone started ringing. And ringing. And ringing.
I smiled, watching his name pop up on my phone. As much as I liked the attention in my state, I knew he wouldn’t stop calling. I turned my phone off, walking back to where my friends were.
“Nora! Where did you go?” Yelled Michelle right before she tackled me in a hug.
I laughed. “Had to take a call, Mich. Let’s dance!” I threw caution go to the wind dancing with my friends.
30 minutes later, Mitch, the football star of the high school I attended, made his way over to me. I was slightly nervous. I had never been this close to another male, except for Nate, but our friendship wasn’t like that.
He placed his hands on my hips, swaying slightly with me. Michelle was giving him approving looks, so I didn’t think much about what was happening. “Nora, is it? Happy birthday, darling.” He whispered in my ear.
I could feel my face flush. No one’s ever really tried to flirt with me before. He slowly spun me in his arms so we were now face to face. He was cute, really cute. The moment didn’t last long. Before I could mutter a thank you, I was being pulled out of his arms and watched as Gabe connected his fist with Mitch’s face.
“Don’t f*****g touch her!” He yelled.
I stood back in shock until I saw Gabe leaning down, ready to punch him again. I screamed! Gabe’s hand stopped midair when he heard me. His head whipped in my direction, seeing pure panic on my face. Michelle had her arms around me, holding me back.
He got up off the sand, taking tentative steps towards me. I couldn’t move. I was holding onto Michelle like she was the only lifeline I had.
“Nora…” he reached out his hand for me. Michelle placed herself between the two of us. Gabe’s eyes darkened as he glanced at her. “Move.”
“No. I won’t let you hurt her, Gabriel Silver.” His face looked like she had just slapped him. Mich turned to me. “Come on, Nora. Let’s go home.”
“I will take her.” Gabe said, taking another step forward.
“I said no, Gabriel. You won’t. Your driver can take us back, that’s what you sent him for anyways.”
She turned me away from him and we started walking. I could hear people behind us whispering about the big bad wolf that ruined the night. I knew he wouldn’t care. And he didn’t. The next thing I knew I was flung over his shoulder, with Michelle yelling at him to put me down.
He stopped, turning towards her and giving everyone a preview of my behind. I gasped and he quickly pulled my dress down, daring anyone to continue looking with his eyes. “Shut up, Michelle, and stop raising your voice. I will take her home, end of discussion. You can go back to your other friends or my driver can take you home. But she is mine, and I will do what I want with her.”
To hell with that! He left her looking speechless, turning and storming off. I started hitting his back. “Put me down right now! Gabriel put me down! I am not yours! Let me go!”
“You can keep hitting and screaming all you want, Princess, but I’m not putting you down until you’re secured in my car. So, you better knock it off before I make you.” His tone was friendly enough, but his words were deadly. I stopped squirming. “Good girl,” he said. And I knew he was wearing his cocky smirk.
He threw me into the passenger seat of his Lamborghini, buckling me up before slamming the door closed. I hit the lock button when he was walking around the front. He pulled the handle but it didn’t open. I saw out of the corner of my eye that he was crouching down to the window, squinting his eyes at me. I started laughing as he clicked the unlock button and climbed in. “Real mature, Nora.” He rolled his eyes at me.
Gabriel started the car, pulling away from the beach and my friends. I crossed my arms, looking out the window. He was about to talk when I reached over and turned the radio up. I was in no mood to hear him after he took my best friend away, and then had the audacity to manhandle me away from my own birthday party!
A few minutes later, I could see my house coming into view but he didn’t stop in the drive way. Instead he kept driving. “Where are you going? That was my house!”
“If you want to act like a little brat, you’re going to stick with me a little while longer.”
“I’m not your property, Gabriel.” I said sarcastically. “You can’t just take me wherever you want.”
I saw his jaw clench and his hands tightened on the steering wheel. He pulled up in front of a set of iron gates with a huge mansion sitting behind it. He nodded at the gatekeeper and the doors opened, allowing us entrance.
He still hadn’t said anything when he parked, getting out of the car and coming around to open my door. “You interrupted a very important meeting, Nora. You made me come pick you up because you couldn’t handle your liquor enough to keep another man’s hands off of what is mine. So, you’re going to shut your mouth and attend the rest of this meeting in silence, or I’m going to punish you. Do you understand me?”
I didn’t think he’d physically hurt me, but this was a side of Gabriel I’ve seen only a few times, and never directed towards me. I knew what he was capable of when he didn’t get his way. I nodded my head.
“Good. Now let’s go.” He grabbed my hand and dragged me behind him.
“Slow down, Gabriel. I can’t move that fast.” His pace slightly changed, but not enough to allow my drunk legs to work properly. I stumbled my way behind him, through the backyard and down stony stairs. I stopped in my tracks at the bottom, seeing a man on his knees with his face a bloody mess.
Gabriel could see my unease, but he didn’t care at the moment. Never taking his eyes off of me, he took off his jacket and started unbuttoning his shirt. When his chest was bare, he handed his clothes to one of his men. They handed him back a gun.
My eyes turned to saucers and I sucked in a breath. There was no way he was going to shoot someone, not when I was watching. But I was wrong. So very wrong.
He walked over to the man, crouching in front of him. “Who sent you?” He asked.
“No one! I swear, I’m telling the truth! It was the wrong place at the wrong time! Please! Don’t kill me!” The man was crying, pleading to Gabe for his life.
“Wrong answer.” Said Gabe. He stood up, aiming the gun at the poor man’s head. “This is what happens when you cross a Silver. I’m sure whoever sent you will get my message loud and clear.”
He pulled the trigger. Before the man’s body slumped over on the concrete, I leaned over and vomited. When the contents of my stomach were empty, Gabe was walking back to me putting his shirt back on. I looked behind him to see two men picking up the dead body.
I shouldn’t have looked. My vision faded and my legs gave out. Before I hit the ground, I felt strong arms catch me, pulling me into a muscular chest. Darkness consumed me, but not before I heard Gabe’s last word.
“Mine.”
