Pippa put on sunglasses to hide her face, tucked her hair up under her hat and kept driving. A car came towards her on the Kilpa road, a black Ford ute – Cade. She looked around wildly, but there was nowhere to hide in this dry, flat landscape. Her worst nightmare was coming true. Madness, to think she could escape him. But in the same moment she understood her mistake. It couldn’t be Cade. He’d torched the black ute in Hattah-Kulkyne by the banks of the Murray – she’d seen it happen with her own two eyes. Yet the terror stayed with her, heightened by the realisation that if Cade did come for her, she wouldn’t recognise his car.
