Pippa woke to find a warm form pressed against her. For a horrifying moment she thought it was Cade and was too scared to open her eyes. But the smell of dog and the wet, tickling tongue in her ear left no doubt about the identity of her bedroom companion. Duke. Pippa laughed aloud, hugging the happy hound and murmuring sweet nothings. ‘Well, boy, no time for lying around. We have to get out of here.’ She sat up, rubbing her eyes. She was still stiff and sore, but felt more refreshed than she had for days. Was it still Sunday? A glance out the window showed daylight – late afternoon by the look of the sun. Good, she hadn’t slept for too long. Her phone lay on the bedside table. She should ring her mother. For all she knew Ruby had dropped by earlier that morning to pick her up for church
