Sitting alone here, in the parlour with all my candles lighted and my books and papers on the table before me, I have many long evenings to reflect. This evening is much like all the others I have endured since the summer when I came here. With my ladies and servants dismissed and despatched to their bedchambers, I can sit alone and order my thoughts much easier. I do not know my fate; I have been advised of nothing and go from day to day picking up whatever intelligence I can from my father and my few visitors but I have no access to bulletin boards or any means of gaining items of news.
