Chapter 10 – Oops… I Fell for the Demon

1135 Words
The Realization The beach was alive with the sound of crashing waves and the chatter of families enjoying the summer air. Alayna walked a few steps behind Kael, watching him take everything in—the gulls circling overhead, the sand between his toes, the smell of grilled food drifting from nearby stalls. They passed a little girl staring longingly at a cotton candy stand, her small hands patting her empty pockets. Kael followed her gaze, then without a word, walked over to the vendor and bought the biggest swirl of pastel pink sugar they had. The girl’s eyes lit up when he handed it to her. “For me?” she asked in a tiny voice. Kael smiled—soft, genuine, nothing like the smirks he usually wore. “For you. Don’t let it melt in the sun.” The girl skipped away, clutching the treat, and Kael returned to Alayna as if nothing had happened. “What?” he asked when he saw her staring. She shook her head, hiding a smile. “Nothing. Just… didn’t think demons had a sweet side.” “Only for certain people,” he said, brushing sand from his hand. That’s when it hit her—like the waves suddenly pulling her under. She’d fallen for him. Not because he was handsome or mysterious or from another world… but because beneath all that, Kael had a heart that cared, even when he pretended otherwise. The Confession The sun was sinking into the ocean, turning the water into molten gold. Alayna and Kael sat on the sand, the cool breeze teasing her hair while waves whispered at their feet. Kael was unusually quiet, watching the horizon as if it held secrets only he could read. “Kael?” she said softly. He glanced at her. “Hmm?” Her heart thudded. “There’s something I’ve been meaning to tell you… and I think I might explode if I keep it in any longer.” That made him turn fully, his eyes sharp with curiosity. “Go on.” Alayna took a shaky breath. “I like you. Not just like—Kael, I’ve completely fallen for you. You’re stubborn, infuriating sometimes, but you’re also the most caring, curious, and unexpectedly gentle person I’ve ever met. And I… I just needed you to know.” For a moment, Kael just stared at her. And then—he grinned. No, beamed. “You mean to tell me I’ve been in love with you all this time… and you’ve only just realized you feel the same?” She blinked. “Wait—you—” Before she could finish, he leaned in and kissed her, slow and warm, the kind of kiss that made the rest of the world vanish. When they pulled back, Kael’s smile was so bright it almost didn’t fit his usual cocky face. “Best confession I’ve ever heard.” "Wait..this wasn't the first time a girl confessed to you ?!" “Oh, plenty have tried, darling… but you’re the only one I said yes to.” narrowing her eyes but smiling “Then I better be the last one you say yes to.” smirking and leaning closer “Happily. I’m already ruined for anyone else.” Matching Clothes A week later, Sarah dragged Alayna into a clothing store with Kael reluctantly in tow. Somehow, they walked out wearing matching hoodies—hers pastel pink, his black, but both with the same embroidered flame on the chest. “This is ridiculous,” Kael grumbled as they exited the store. “You love it,” Alayna teased. He didn’t deny it. In fact, the next day, he wore it again… “just because it was warm.” But when they were out in public and someone complimented the hoodies, he smirked and slung his arm around her shoulders. “Yeah, it’s a couple thing.” Dates and Jealousy They tried everything—movie nights, visiting the aquarium, even wandering around the city after dark just to see what was open. On one particular afternoon, while Kael was ordering coffee, the barista gave him an extra-sweet smile and wrote her number on his cup. Kael raised an eyebrow and slid the cup across the counter to Alayna. “Looks like you’ve got a fan.” She rolled her eyes. “Don’t start—” He leaned in, voice low. “I’m yours. Always. But just so we’re clear… if anyone tries flirting with you, I can’t promise I’ll be polite.” She laughed, but the next time a stranger complimented her in front of him, Kael’s hand found her waist immediately, his eyes sending a silent mine. Double Dates Sarah and Zayn were just as bad. Their double dates usually turned into playful competitions—mini golf, escape rooms, even karaoke battles. “Couple vs. couple,” Zayn would declare. “Losers buy dinner,” Kael would add. And somehow, it was always Alayna and Kael winning—much to Sarah’s annoyance. the Same Bed The Same Bed It happened after a long movie marathon. Alayna’s couch was too small, and her room too far for Kael to bother teleporting home. “You’re staying?” she asked. “Unless you kick me out,” he said, already lying on the bed like he owned it. They ended up tangled together, his arm draped over her waist. At some point, she fell asleep to the sound of his steady breathing. The next morning, she woke to find him still there, half-asleep, murmuring, “Five more minutes,” and pulling her closer. Making Breakfast Together One Sunday morning, Kael decided he was going to “help” make breakfast. “This doesn’t look that hard,” he said, holding a whisk like a weapon. Ten minutes later, there was pancake batter on the counter, the floor, and somehow… in his hair. “You’re a disaster,” Alayna laughed, but she was smiling the whole time. “Yeah, but I’m your disaster,” he replied, leaning over to peck her cheek. Job Hunting Both of them decided it was time to find work. They walked into several cafes, bookstores, and shops—Kael somehow charming half the managers without even trying. At one point, a*****e owner leaned over to Alayna and whispered, “Your boyfriend’s very charismatic.” Alayna’s cheeks warmed. “Yeah… I know.” They ended the day sitting on a bench, sharing ice cream while flipping through job listings on her phone. Kael pointed at one. “This one looks fun.” “It’s a pet shop.” “Exactly. Who wouldn’t trust a demon with their pets?” She burst out laughing, realizing just how far they’d come—from strangers to partners in everything.
