Mercy~ Dara Twelvestones On the second day of the siege, the sun beat down from another sapphire sky, and the gods looked away again. Dara watched from the battlements. Sweat and muscle turned the wheels down below. Soldiers pushed a siege tower across the field, plowing ruts through tender spring wheat, advancing yard by yard. The cadence of war drums began as soon as the army finished gathering its dead from the night before. The incessant beating had been echoing through Dara’s head until he was ready to leap off the battlement, run at the sound, and strangle the first drummer he reached.
