“Wow. I didn’t know they could hold that many. He began carding his fingers through Jake’s hair, drawing furrows back from his scalp. “That okay?”
“No. Please stop.” He knew he’d probably enjoy it if he could relax but right then it was too much, his nerves so raw that even the light touch was close to painful. He flicked his head and Gabriel snatched his hand away.
“Sorry.” Gabriel let go of Jake’s hand as well.
“It’s all right.” Jake missed the contact but it was more comfortable being able to cross his arms, and Gabriel still had his hand on Jake’s chest, so Jake was keenly aware of Gabriel’s presence all around him.
“How many patients were you carrying?”
Jake froze. “Don’t ask that. Please don’t ask me that.”
