Molly looked wary, but she nodded. “Okay, Mommy.” she squirmed a little so Jake would let her down. She looked over her shoulder as she went back to the couch, as if to make sure Jake would really be all right without her. “Let’s go into the kitchen,” Alice said. Jake was visibly uncomfortable but he gamely followed her. Gabe stayed where he was, thinking maybe it was time for him to leave, and then feeling angry at himself for how reluctant he was to do that. He carefully pressed the tender skin below his eye, reminding himself he still had a very good reason to go. And he figured Jake’s family could probably use some privacy. But when Jake looked at him and said, “You’re leaving?” like Gabe would take Jake’s heart along for the ride, Gabe just shook his head and went into the kitchen
