Chapter 6Jake woke up gasping. He heard his name and surged upright, then whipped his body around to see Gabriel, who was sitting cross-legged on the far side of the bed from him, with the soft lines of his face creased in worry. “It’s okay, you’re safe. You’re in my apartment. You had a bad dream.” Gabriel shifted closer and carefully touched Jake’s bare arm, then left it there when Jake didn’t flinch. Gabriel rubbed Jake’s arm gently. “You okay?” Jake nodded. He changed position so he was sitting as well, rather than crouched like a frightened animal ready to bolt. He took deep breaths, trying to calm his raging heartbeat. “Thanks.” He looked at Gabriel. “I didn’t hurt you, did I?” Gabriel shook his head. “You didn’t touch me.” He moved closer and lifted his hand from Jake’s arm to t
