(Kaela)
Sunlight creeps into the west wing, soft and warm — a sharp contrast to the cold night she survived.
Kaela stands by the window, her heart still tangled with the image of Vionn sleeping—no, guarding—outside her door.
She tries to shake it off.
It shouldn’t matter.
It can’t matter.
This marriage is a trap.
A cage made of luxury and lies.
But her chest still feels tight.
She hears the softest knock on her door.
Not the cold, commanding knock she’s used to.
This one is hesitant.
Almost… gentle.
Her pulse jumps.
She opens the door.
Vionn stands there, dressed in a dark shirt, sleeves rolled to his forearms, hair slightly messy like he didn’t bother taming it.
He looks… human.
And for once, not made of stone.
His ice-blue eyes soften the moment they land on her.
“Good morning,” he says quietly.
Kaela blinks.
“Did you… sleep at all?”
A faint smirk pulls at his mouth — the type of smirk that feels like a secret.
“I didn’t need to.”
She crosses her arms. “That’s not an answer.”
“It’s the only one you’re getting.”
Her breath catches.
Why does he do that?
Why does he say everything like it has two meanings — the dangerous one and the one he’ll never admit?
Before she can respond, Vionn steps closer, slow and measured.
He holds something out.
A small velvet box.
Kaela freezes.
“What’s that?”
“An apology,” he says.
Her heart stutters.
Vionn Blackwood.
The coldest man she’s ever met.
Apologizing?
“For what?” she manages to whisper.
“For frightening you.”
His voice is so soft she almost doesn’t recognize it.
“For failing to keep danger away from you.”
Her mouth goes dry.
He places the velvet box in her hand — without brushing her skin.
Not a touch.
Not even an accidental graze.
He’s careful.
Almost painfully careful.
Like one touch might shatter something in both of them.
Kaela opens the box.
Inside is a delicate bracelet — white gold, thin and elegant, with a tiny sapphire charm the same color as his eyes.
“It has a tracker,” he says.
She looks up sharply.
He meets her gaze head-on.
“Not to own you,” he adds quickly, tension flickering in his eyes.
“To protect you. So I know if you’re safe. So no one can take you again.”
Kaela’s breath trembles.
“It’s beautiful,” she whispers before she can stop herself.
Vionn’s expression shifts — something subtle, something fragile.
Something she never expected to see on his face.
Relief.
“May I?” he asks, voice low.
She hesitates.
Not because she’s afraid.
But because her pulse won’t calm down.
Finally, she nods.
Vionn steps closer.
So close she can feel the warmth coming off his body like a slow-burning flame.
She lifts her wrist.
His fingers hover above her skin — not touching — waiting for permission.
She swallows.
“It’s okay.”
Only then does he take her wrist gently, as if she’s something breakable.
His touch is barely there — featherlight.
But it feels like a spark travels up her arm.
Kaela’s breath catches.
Vionn’s does too.
His thumb brushes her skin accidentally — or maybe not — and just that small touch feels… dangerous.
Soft.
Intimate.
Like a promise neither of them is ready to voice.
When he finally clasps the bracelet, neither of them moves away.
For a long, suspended second, they simply stand there, caught in something warm and unfamiliar.
Vionn is the first to break the tension.
“Breakfast?” he asks, voice rough.
Kaela nods slowly.
He steps back, reluctantly.
“Follow me.”
---
(Vionn)
He tries to breathe normally as they walk down the grand staircase.
He fails.
Kaela’s scent.
Her quiet voice.
Her trust — small, hesitant, but real.
It’s too much.
Too dangerous.
Last night changed everything.
Seeing her terrified.
Her fragile hope.
Her bravery when demanding answers.
And then…
Waking to find her door slightly open
and her eyes searching for him
like he was the only person who made her feel safe.
That broke him.
Completely.
She doesn’t understand what she’s doing to him.
How her softness cuts deeper than any threat.
How her fear makes him want to protect her with a violence the world isn’t ready for.
He glances at her as they walk.
She plays with the bracelet nervously.
“Does it bother you?” he murmurs.
“No,” she whispers.
“It… feels like someone finally wants me safe.”
Something inside him cracks.
He stops walking.
She nearly bumps into him.
Vionn turns, slowly, gently lifting her chin with a single finger.
“Kaela,” he murmurs, voice deep and soft,
“I will never let anything happen to you.”
Her breath shakes.
“You promise a lot,” she whispers.
“And I keep every promise I make.”
She swallows, staring up at him.
Something warm blooms between them.
Not fire.
Not passion.
Just… warmth.
Slow, careful warmth.
A beginning.
Vionn drops his hand the moment he feels things slipping too far.
“Come,” he says quietly.
“Let’s eat.”
---
(Kaela)
Breakfast feels different.
The Blackwood dining hall is enormous, with chandeliers made of crystal and a table longer than her old village hall.
But for the first time, she doesn’t feel like a stranger sitting in a museum.
She feels… almost human.
Vionn pulls out her chair.
Kaela blinks at him.
“Since when do you do that?”
“Since now.”
She bites back a shy smile.
The air between them shifts.
Softer.
Warmer.
Less frozen.
As they eat, she catches Vionn staring at her more than once.
Not possessive.
Not angry.
Just… watching her with quiet curiosity.
Like he’s memorizing her.
She feels her cheeks heat.
When the meal ends, Vionn stands slowly.
“Kaela,” he says gently,
“How would you feel about seeing the gardens?”
Her heart jumps.
“That sounds… nice.”
He nods once.
But before they leave the room, he steps close again — close enough to hear her heartbeat, close enough to make her breath thin.
He leans in.
Not touching.
Just near.
“Stay where I can see you,” he whispers.
A warning wrapped in affection.
A threat wrapped in care.
Kaela’s pulse races.
“I will.”
Vionn exhales — a slow, relieved sound.
“Good.”
He offers his hand.
Not grabbing.
Not forcing.
Just offering.
Kaela hesitates only a moment before she places her hand in his.
He closes his fingers around hers gently.
And when they walk into the sunlight together—
It feels like the beginning
of something dangerous
and beautiful.
Something neither of them can stop now.
