CHAPTER 24— The Shadow Comes for Kaela

1091 Words
(Truth: the Shadow is not supernatural… it is the Blackwood family’s greatest living enemy. The sigils, the myths, the “chosen bloodlines”… all lies crafted to weaken and break the family from inside.) The Blackwood mansion had never felt this silent. Not the elegant kind of silence it usually held— not the expensive, controlled stillness. No. This was different. This silence felt wrong. Like the house was trying to warn her. Like the walls themselves were listening. Kaela stood in the hallway outside Vionn’s study, her arms wrapped around herself. Everyone else was gone—Lucas, Sophia, even the staff. Vionn had driven to the city for an urgent board meeting, refusing to take her into that mess. “I’ll only be gone for two hours,” he’d said, kissing her forehead gently. “Stay inside. Don’t wander.” She hadn’t understood why he looked so tense when he left… but now she did. The air grew colder. Not natural cold. A crawling, heavy cold that wrapped around her spine and squeezed. Kaela’s breath stuttered. “…Vionn?” No answer. But she wasn’t alone. Not anymore. --- (The First Sign — The Piano Begins to Play) A single piano note echoed through the mansion. One she knew. A soft, trembling key from the east wing. Adriana’s room. Kaela froze. “No… that’s not possible…” The house was empty. Absolutely empty. Her pulse thundered as another note played. And another. Slow… deliberate… beckoning her. Kaela took a step back. But the door behind her slammed shut on its own. The lights flickered violently. A cold whisper brushed past her ear. “Kaela…” Her heart nearly stopped. She wasn’t imagining it. This wasn’t her mind . playing tricks. Something was here. Something alive. Something watching. --- (It Speaks Her Name Again) The piano melodies grew sharper, more aggressive, as if impatient. Kaela’s breath shook. “Vionn…” she whispered again, her voice cracking. The answer came immediately. Close. Too close. “He can’t hear you.” Kaela jumped, her back hitting the wall. The voice was low, distorted—like someone speaking from underwater. Male, but not fully human. Cold wind swept through the hallway, lifting her hair, brushing her skin like ghost fingers. “You’re… the Shadow,” she whispered. A sound like a slow, amused exhale echoed behind her. “Good. You’re smarter than Adriana was.” Kaela felt sick. “Don’t talk about her.” The Shadow laughed softly. Not loudly. Not wildly. Soft. Chilling. Cruel. “She said that too.” --- ( The Shadow Finally Appears) It was male. Smooth. Calculated. Closer. Kaela backed into the wall, her hands blindly feeling for something—anything—to use as a weapon. A shadow shifted at the far end. Not a supernatural cloud… but a tall silhouette. Solid. Human. “Adriana said that too,” the voice murmured. “Right before she begged.” Kaela’s breath hitched painfully. “You killed her.” A laugh. “I used her. And she broke. That simple.” Kaela’s stomach twisted. “You won’t touch me.” “Oh, but I already have,” the voice purred. “Ever since you entered this house, I’ve been in every hallway, every shadow, every place Vionn thought was safe.” Her hands shook. “Why me?” “Because Vionn loves you,” he said. “And nothing destroys a Blackwood faster than taking the woman he loves.” Kaela’s heart dropped. No. No. No. “What do you want?” she whispered. The silhouette stepped closer. “I want Vionn broken. I want this family ruined. And you… my darling… are the most efficient way to do it.” Her breath stilled. “I’m not like Adriana,” Kaela said shakily. “I won’t fall for your games.” “Oh, you already have fallen.” He chuckled. “You’re alone. In the dark. With me.” She swallowed hard, forcing her voice to stay strong. “I’m not alone.” A pause. “Oh? Who’s here to save you?” She didn’t answer. Because she didn’t need to. Kaela couldn’t breathe. She took a step backward. It stepped forward. She backed up again. It mirrored her. Like a predator learning her movements. “You don’t belong here,” it murmured. Kaela swallowed hard. “Then why do you want me?” A slow, unnatural tilt of the head. “Because you’re his.” Her pulse spiked. “This is about Vionn?” “Everything is about Vionn Blackwood.” Its voice twisted— hate wrapped in silk. “He took what wasn’t his… so I took it back.” Kaela’s heart dropped. “You killed Adriana.” “…Not at first.” “She let me in. Through fear. Through confusion. Through her desperation to save him.” Its tone deepened. “You will too.” Kaela shook her head violently. “No. I’m not letting you manipulate me.” A cold, mocking whisper answered: “They all say that at first.” --- (It Comes Closer) Kaela stepped backward into the main staircase hall, the wooden floors creaking under her trembling feet. But the shadow followed. The temperature plunged— her breath turned white in the air. A picture frame fell from the second-floor balcony and shattered. Kaela stumbled. The shadow moved faster. She ran. She sprinted toward the master bedroom—toward the only room that felt safe, felt like Vionn. “STOP FOLLOW ME —LET ME GO!” A soft whisper crawled along her skin. “Why? So you can run back into his arms?” That Man, blocking her escape. “Adriana begged like this too.” Kaela froze. Shock. Fear. Rage. She turned slowly to face it. “Why her? Why me?” she demanded, voice shaking but steady. “Because Blackwoods don’t deserve love.” Her chest tightened. “And because taking you is the only way to break him.” Kaela’s heart pounded so violently she felt dizzy. “You won’t touch me,” she whispered. The Man paused. “…Why not?” Kaela lifted her chin, even though she was shaking. “Because Vionn will come for me.” A long silence. Then— A cold, inhuman smile spread across him face. “I’m counting on it.” The shadow surged forward— the lights exploded— Kaela screamed— And the chapter ends right there, with the mansion plunging into darkness as the Shadow reaches for her.
