CHAPTER 20— “THE SHADOW MAKES ITS MOVE

855 Words
(The night the danger steps out of hiding… and toward Kaela.) The house felt colder after Vionn walked away. Not just quiet. Not just lonely. Cold. Kaela stood in the middle of the room, her fingers still trembling where they’d touched him, her heartbeat still caught between longing and pain. She had never seen him break before. Not like that. Not with fear. Not with memory. And now— Something else was watching her. She didn’t know how long it had been there. Maybe seconds. Maybe minutes. But slowly… the back of her neck prickled. Like an invisible fingertip tracing her skin. Like someone standing too close. She turned. No one. But the curtains were swaying. And the window— a crack open. She frowned. I remember shutting that. The lights flickered once. Just once. But in the dark glass of the window, she swore she saw— A shape. Behind her. Tall. Still. Wrong. Kaela spun around. Nothing. But the air felt wrong now. Dense. Thick. Like a presence pressing down on her chest. Stop it, Kaela. You’re just shaken from Vionn— A soft sound interrupted her thoughts. A breath. Not hers. Behind her. Slow. Deliberate. Her blood turned to ice. She turned to the mirror this time— and froze. Because reflected in the far corner of the room… was a silhouette. Tall. Motionless. Watching her. Kaela’s breath hitched painfully. She spun to face the corner— Empty. But the reflection hadn’t lied. Her fingers curled into fists, but her knees felt weak. She took one careful step backward. Then another. Every instinct screamed at her to run— but her voice came out in a whisper. “Who’s there?” A pause. Silence. Then— A voice. A low, distorted whisper that slid across the air like a razor: “You’re not enough to replace her.” Kaela’s heart stopped. Her breath stuttered hard. She searched the shadows, eyes wide. “Who—?” Her voice cracked. “What do you want?” A soft, cold chuckle filled the room. “You.” Her stomach dropped. Cold sweat broke across her spine. This wasn’t a ghost. Not her imagination. A man. A real man. Somewhere inside the room. Hidden. Close. Too close. “Why… why me?” she whispered, barely able to speak. The voice exhaled near her ear— but no one was there. “Because Adriana was precious to him.” A bone-deep whisper. “And you… will hurt him even more.” Kaela staggered backward, hitting the dresser. Her eyes darted across every corner, trying to find a shape, a body, anything— but the shadows stayed still. “How did you get inside?” Her voice trembled violently. A soft drag of fingers across the wall— coming from behind the curtains. Her breath froze. “He protected her.” The voice moved again, too smooth, too calm. “He failed.” A low, cold laugh. “This time… I’ll take my time.” Kaela gasped— and ran. She sprinted out the bedroom door, her heartbeat pounding so loud it felt like it was in her throat. She stumbled down the hall, nearly slipping as terror pushed her faster and faster. “VIONN!” she screamed, voice breaking. Footsteps thundered— from the left corridor. “KAELA!” His voice was sharp, lethal, panicked. Vionn reached her just as she crashed into him. She grabbed his shirt tightly, shaking so badly she could barely breathe. “There’s—” Her voice cracked. “There’s someone in the room. Someone was watching me. He— he spoke to me—” Vionn’s blood drained from his face instantly. His entire body tensed like a predator hearing a threat near its mate. “What did he say?” His voice was low. Deadly. Kaela swallowed, trembling uncontrollably. “He said…” Her breath hitched. “He said I’m not enough to replace Adriana.” Vionn’s pupils blew wide— with rage. With terror. And something else. Possession. His grip tightened protectively on her arms. “Where is he now?” Vionn’s voice was hardly human. Kaela shook her head desperately. “I don’t… I don’t know— he was there, then gone— but he was real, Vionn— I’m not imagining—” “I know.” His voice was a growl. “I believe you.” He pulled her fully into his chest, one hand cradling the back of her head, the other gripping her waist like he was anchoring her to him. She felt him shaking. Not with fear. With fury. Pure, murderous fury. “Kaela,” he whispered into her hair, voice breaking, “as long as I’m alive, he will never take you.” Her hands clung to him. But then— his voice shifted, darker. “Because if he tries…” His breath brushed her ear. “…I’ll kill him myself.” Kaela shivered violently. Not from fear of Vionn— From the terrifying, overwhelming certainty: He meant every word. And the shadow, somewhere inside that mansion, smiled in the dark.
