NARA POV
The sound of lively and excited chatter filled the hall.
I moved through making my way, while looking for Jake.
Our eyes met across the hall and I smiled brightly.
He was dressed in a red suit,a black tie and a blue cufflink.
He looked so dangerously handsome, I couldn't believe he was mine.
My soon to be husband, today was my birthday and it was also our engagement party and I was so excited and happy.
"Bless, how are you? You look so excited, happy birthday" Ann said excitedly hugging me from behind
"I feel so happy and giddy" I squealed, "my dad's going to announce my engagement to Jake today".
" Really?" She hugged me while laughing.
"Bye"
I stopped a waiter, took a drink and headed for Jake's directions.
Since last week, I haven't had the chance to see him or talk to him. He's been avoiding my calls, not replying to my messages.
"Hi Jake can i-"
I was suddenly interrupted by Ellie and her minions, Stella and Becca.
"Jake my dad would like to speak with you in the study" She held his hands ignoring my presence.
"Sure, after you". He wrapped his hands around her waist as they left.
I was about to go after them when a waiter bumped into me pouring red wine on me.
The red stain slowly spread against my white dress.
" I'm so sorry" The waiter bowed and left.
I knew it wasn't a mistake cause I could feel the taunting gaze of Ellie from the staircase.
I hurried back to my room to change. It was my engagement day and nothing was going to go wrong or spoil.
Stepping out I saw Stella and Becca at the doorway laughing.
"I guess the real princess thinks she's the real one. Right?".
" They think been blood related makes them loves you"
" And what do you mean if I may ask? "I cut in the conversation, I knew they were talking about me but I didn't care.
" Who knows?" They left leaving me in the walkway, wallowing at the unsaid words.
I knew I was never welcomed here, I was actually brought back a year ago.
When I was eight I was kidnapped and my mother couldn't bear it so they had to adopt another child to replace me.
Years later I was brought back by my uncle who claimed I bore an uncertain resemblance to someone he knew and they did a DNA test and found out I was the child that was lost.
At first I was slightly loved and accepted but it seemed to get on Ellie's nerves because she could frame me at any little chance.
Coming down I saw Jake standing close to the desert table, I immediately ran on my heels.
"Jake, you've been avoiding me." I reached out to touch him and he avoided me but I pretended not to notice it.
"What's wrong? Did I do anything to upset you?Did your illness act up again? "
"No" He paused, "can't you take the hint I don't want to talk to you, and don't think I've forgiven you for what you did to Ellie."
"Ellie... What did I do to her?". I asked but he walked away.
The sound of glass clinging stopped me from chasing after him.
My father had climbed a stair calling for everyone's attention.
"Good evening everyone, so happy you all could make it." He paused for a moment with a smile on his face. "Well as we all know it's a joyous occasion, so I would like to announce something else".
Everyone cheered and clapped earnestly waiting for the news.
" I would like to announce the engagement between my daughter... "
I smiled walking to him before I heard the word that broke me.
"... Ellie and Jake Stock. Cheers to them."
They both stood next to my father smiling like the perfect couple everyone has been calling them.
"It's an honor to be able to get engaged to the love of my life"
'Love of his life.. What a joke. He had always called me that told me that I was his jewel, he wouldn't leave me for anything. But I stood here and he called her the love of his life.
Men. I should have known it, we had actually met in hospital, he was sick and according to the shaman his grandmother visited he should stay close to someone with clean energy.
And I was the one, so he moved close to my house and we became friends before he suddenly confessed about who he was and that he liked me.
He was the reason I accepted coming to the family, so I could be of equal standing with him.
"I told you so. Now look, do you think you're the main character? ". She paused, giving my hair a swirl with her fingers.
" No, you're not. I mean you're supposed to be the one whom the limelight should be shining on but here you are standing in the corner like a drenched and abandoned cat".
The words she said seemed to push me past my point as I headed for my dad's direction.
"Dad, this wasn't what we talked about. He's supposed to be engaged to your Real daughter'. I added force on the real daughter so he would know.
" She's also my daughter, what do you mean?."
"But she's adopted, I'm your flesh and blood. I'm the one who has your blood running through my veins. Not her" I pointed at Ellie who was heading towards our direction with a smile on her face.
I tried so hard not to let a tear slip, I wasn't going to let her see me cry.
"Dad, what's going on?". She held his hand.
They looked like the real father and daughter while I looked like a corner piece of the painting.
" Sister, don't stress dad. It wasn't his fault. Hope you don't mind?"
It was this same trick again, she was looking for a reaction from me.
"You know what, you have something on you". She stepped closer. " Do you really think you can come back and take everything from me, you're mistaken".
Before I could react, a loud sound resounded and she held her face and fell down, crying.
Jake ran over pushing me out of the way to help her up.
"Nara, how could you hit her?. Are you that evil?".
" My baby, what happened?" My mum ran over anxiously checking her body. Before her eyes landed on the handprint on her face. "Who hit you? "
"Mum please don't blame sister, she was just correcting me" She broke down in tears while hugging her.
"Did I just hear that correctly..? Nara how could you? I know you've hated her but you shouldn't have done this".
" Mum, I didn't hit her, she slapped herself." I tried defending myself but nobody believed me. It has always been the same.
