NARA POV.
SEVEN MONTHS LATER.
“Miss Nara, this way, please”.
I followed the nurse down the quiet hallway, one hand instinctively resting beneath my swollen stomach.
The nurse helped me onto the examination bed before the gynecologist lifted my dress slightly applying the cool gel on my stomach.
I flinched at the cold.
“Sorry”, She said with a warm smile. “It'll warm up”.
The machine came to life, and I turned my head to the screen. At first, all I could make out were strange objects and shadows.
Then she pointed. “There's your baby”.
My breath caught.
The image wasn't perfectly clear but I could see the tiny body moving.
One hand was fisted tightly, while the other was close to the mouth.
“He's sucking his hand,” I whispered, unable to stop myself from smiling.
The doctor chuckled softly. “Looks like someone is getting comfortable and ready to be out”.
I stared at the screen, my eyes beginning to sting.
My baby.
My hand slowly moved over to my stomach.
“Hi baby”. I whispered softly.
Almost as if it heard me, something fluttered beneath my palm.
I gasped. “ It kicked”.
“Yes. Very active”. The doctor smiled.
A laugh escaped me, but tears followed almost immediately. I quickly wiped them away.
“Congratulations, Miss Nara”. The doctor said, "Everything looks healthy, and the baby is developing well”.
Relief washed over me. “Thank you”.
“Would you like to know the gender”. She looked at me.
I stared at the screen again, for a moment I was tempted. But I shook my head.
“No, I want it to be a surprise”.
The doctor nodded. “Alright, we'll keep it a surprise”.
When the examination was over the nurse handed me the ultrasound picture. I took them carefully, as though they were something precious.
I couldn't stop smiling. I rubbed the edge of the picture, before slipping it into my bag.
I reached for my phone. I wanted to call him.
I wanted to hear his voice and tell him that the baby's healthy. But then I smiled to myself.
No. Maybe I should just head to his house.
I rested my palm on my stomach again. “Your daddy's going to be happy to see you”.
****
The house was unusually quiet.
“Jake”. I called out as I stepped in, I had expected him to be at home, so I smiled at myself, already thinking about his reaction.
I dropped the shopping bags on the counter. That was when I saw them.
A pair of red stilettos heels sat carelessly by the couch.
My smile faded
I stared at the heels for a minute. It seemed familiar.
Then I heard something upstairs. A muffled sound.
I froze.
Another followed , then a man's low groan.
My heart began pounding.
“Jake?”. There was no response.
I climbed the stairs slowly, each step making my uneasiness worsen.
Clothes were scattered along the hallway, leading to his bedroom.
My stomach twisted.
Before I could take a step, everything went silent.
I pushed the door open slightly. Then I heard a woman's voice.
“Why did you tell her you were the father?”. Her voice shook. “You knew the truth.”
It sounded familiar.
It belonged to Ellie.
“I felt guilty”.
“ And you decided that was the best way to feel less guilty”.
I pushed the door open.
My fingers went numb around the doorknob. I couldn't feel the floor anymore.
I stared at them, waiting for Jake to say something that would make what I was seeing impossible.
Ellie slowly pulled the blanket around herself as Jake hurriedly looked for his clothes.
I couldn't hear anything except the pounding in my ears.
“What did you say?”
“Nara,wait”.
My chest tightened.
Then Ellie's voice came behind him. “Yes you heard right, he isn't the father of your child”.
“What?” It broke me completely, the room seemed to tilt.
“You claimed you guys were childhood lovers with him, yet you don't know his figure”.
Blood rushed up to my face.
“The baby” My hands instinctively went to my stomach. “ You said you were the father”.
Jake swallowed hard.
“I wanted to protect you”.
“ Protect me?. Did I ask you to” I laughed bitterly.
Ellie stepped forward with a smug smile tugging her lips.“You should be grateful to him. He is the only reason Dad didn't throw you out that day”. She tilted her head. “ Or have you forgotten”.
“Ellie…”
It had all been her.
“It's the truth”.
“So you knew all along that Ellie drugged me to ruin my innocence? Yet for the sake of protecting her, you said that it was you that night.” I looked at Jake.
“Yes. Ellie was just young and impulsive, she didn't mean to.” He lowered his head.
Something inside me went completely numb.
I was shocked. He knew everything yet he lied.
I picked up my bag from the floor.
Jake stepped towards me. “Where are you going?”.
“Anywhere that isn't here”.
“Nara you're upset, you can't drive. Let me call my driver”.
I looked at him, a strange laugh escaped me.
He reached for my arm. I pulled away.
“Don't touch me”.
I walked downstairs with tears streaming down my face. I grabbed the door handle and went outside.
The evening air hit my face, but I barely felt it.
The baby wasn't his.
He had known yet he lied.
In order to match his upbringing and family background, I left my adoptive parents to return to the family, clumsily trying to please those so-called distinguished figures
I walked towards the road without knowing where I was going.
My vision blurred. I wiped my tears with the back of my hand.
Someone screamed.
A horn blared. I froze.
The head lights came straight at me.
I tried to move but my body wouldn't respond.
A violent impact knocked air from my lungs. My body lifted from the ground before hitting the pavement.
“Help— help—A pregnant woman was hit—”.
Pain shot through me.
The cramping pain that came from my belly caused me
to lose consciousness bit by bit.
I couldn't hear properly, everything sounded distant.
My fingers curled weakly around my stomach.
I only blinked my eyes once, and the fresh blood on my forehead flowed into my eyes…
The baby.
That was my last thought before, the world fell into darkness…
