✨ Chapter Two – Final Extension

277 Words
The morning sun slipped through the bakery’s small window, turning the flour-dusted counters gold. Amara moved slower than usual, her body busy with routine while her mind replayed every second of the night before. The kiss. The jacket. His words—one step at a time. Her aunt noticed. “You’re quiet today,” Ifeoma said, pressing dough into a neat round. “I didn’t sleep much,” Amara admitted. “Dreams?” Amara smiled faintly, eyes fixed on her hands. “Something like that.” She couldn’t explain it, not yet. How could she tell her aunt that for the first time in years, she wasn’t just drifting through her days? That someone’s presence had lit a spark inside her she hadn’t even realized she was missing? As she set a tray of rolls by the oven, her gaze drifted to the door, half-expecting it to swing open and reveal Adrian standing there, damp with rain again, book in hand. The thought made her laugh softly at herself. Too soon, too foolish. And yet, her heart beat faster anyway. Across town, Adrian sat in a café, notebook open but untouched. Every time he tried to focus on his work, the scent of fresh bread drifted into his memory, the sound of her voice filling the spaces between thoughts. He told himself it was just fascination, the natural spark of something new. But deep down, he knew better. For both of them, the world had shifted overnight. Subtly, quietly, like rain seeping into the ground. But once rain sinks in, it never truly leaves. And neither of them could shake the certainty: This was only the beginning.
